Plan the route

Start with the part of Asia you actually want to see

Choose a region before comparing ships. Look at the actual ports, overnight calls, sea days and embarkation terminal. A city-focused Japan circuit needs a different plan from a tropical Southeast Asia sailing or a longer voyage across the Indian Ocean.

Japan and Korea

Japan-focused sailings can circle several coasts or concentrate on a smaller region, sometimes adding a Korean call such as Busan. Tokyo-area departures may use Yokohama, and Osaka or Kobe can be gateways for Kyoto. Compare overnight stays and transfer time; a distant landmark is not automatically an easy port-day outing.

China, Hong Kong and Taiwan

Some voyages focus on these ports, while others link them with Japan or Southeast Asia. Hong Kong can be a starting point or a longer city call, and Keelung is a gateway for Taipei. Check the exact terminal and each country’s entry requirements for the specific sailing.

Southeast Asia

Singapore-based routes can combine Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam, with other voyages reaching Indonesia or the Philippines. Compare beach calls with city gateways: Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City and Kuala Lumpur can involve substantial transfers from Laem Chabang, Phu My and Port Klang. Overnight calls can give a different pace from a single daytime stop.

South Asia and longer voyages

Voyages visiting India and Sri Lanka can connect Southeast Asia with the Indian Ocean. Longer repositioning routes may continue to Australia or other regions, adding sea days and one-way flight logistics. Compare the published route, stops and total time at sea; a destination named in the voyage title may be only one part of the trip.

Asia departure ports

Singapore, Hong Kong and Tokyo-area ports are major gateways and destinations in their own right. Confirm whether a Tokyo departure uses Yokohama or another terminal. For a one-way voyage, compare flights into the starting city and home from the ending city, plus hotel nights, transfers and entry requirements.

Port-day planning

Distances matter more than they look on the itinerary

Read the port name as carefully as the city name. Laem Chabang, Phu My and Port Klang can involve substantial travel to Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City and Kuala Lumpur. Keelung serves Taipei, while Kyoto visits require onward travel from ports such as Osaka or Kobe. Leave time for both transfers, traffic and the ship’s all-aboard deadline; an overnight call changes the options available.

Asia cruise FAQ
Where do Asia cruises go?

Common route types include Japan with Korean calls, China and Hong Kong with Taiwan, Southeast Asia from Singapore, and South Asia voyages visiting India or Sri Lanka. Longer itineraries can connect several regions. Compare the day-by-day route rather than assuming an Asia cruise covers all of them.

When should I cruise Asia?

There is no single season for the whole region. Japan and Korea have distinct spring and autumn scenery, while tropical routes need planning around heat, rain and regional monsoon patterns. Storms can alter calls. Match the dates to the specific coast and ports; seasonal flowers and foliage are not guaranteed.

How long are Asia cruises?

Short regional getaways and weeklong sailings are available, while Japan circuits and multi-country voyages can run considerably longer. Repositioning trips may add many sea days. Check overnight calls, time in each port and transfers as well as total nights.

Where do Asia cruises depart from?

Major gateways include Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan’s Tokyo-area ports, including Yokohama. Some voyages begin in other cities such as Shanghai or Mumbai. Confirm the exact terminal and plan airport transfers and hotel nights, especially when a one-way cruise ends in a different country.

Can I explore Asia cruise ports independently?

Some calls suit independent exploring, but a city name on an itinerary may refer to a distant port. Laem Chabang serves Bangkok, Phu My serves Ho Chi Minh City, and Port Klang serves Kuala Lumpur. Compare the actual berth, transfer time and all-aboard deadline before planning an outing.

What should I check before a multi-country Asia cruise?

Confirm passport and entry requirements for your nationality with official authorities and the cruise line for every country on the itinerary, including transit and embarkation. Requirements can differ from a flight-only visit. Also compare currencies, mobile connectivity and the logistics at both ends of a one-way voyage.
