Start with the part of Australia & New Zealand you actually want to see
Start with the coast or islands you want to see. Australia is large, and a combined Australia and New Zealand voyage does not cover every region. Compare the actual ports, sea days and one-way flight logistics before comparing ships.
Australian coastal routes
Short coastal sailings can link major cities, while Queensland routes head toward tropical ports and reef excursions. Southern and western voyages offer a different coastline, and round-Australia journeys need much more time. A reef visit depends on the port, excursion and conditions; it is not included simply because a sailing visits Queensland.
Tasmania and southern Australia
Tasmania-focused cruises can include Hobart and other island calls, sometimes alongside Melbourne or additional southern ports. Compare city time with the travel needed for nature outings. Tasmania’s cooler conditions call for a different packing plan from tropical northern Australia.
New Zealand and the Tasman Sea
New Zealand itineraries can combine North and South Island ports with scenic cruising in Fiordland. Australian round trips add crossings of the Tasman Sea; one-way routes between Australia and Auckland need flights at different ends. Count scenic passages separately from days ashore, especially at Milford Sound.
Longer voyages to Asia and the South Pacific
Repositioning and extended voyages may connect Australia or New Zealand with Asia, Fiji, other Pacific islands or more distant regions. Those extra destinations are separate from this geographic hub. Compare sea days, entry requirements and the starting and ending cities before choosing a longer route.

Australia & New Zealand departure ports
Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Auckland are common starting points. Fremantle serves the Perth area on western Australian routes. Confirm the exact terminal and transfer arrangements, then compare flights, hotel nights and entry requirements for both ends of the trip.

Distances matter more than they look on the itinerary
A city name may refer to a nearby coastal gateway: Lyttelton serves Christchurch and Port Chalmers serves Dunedin. Reef excursions and distant national parks need their own transport budget. Separate scenic cruising from shore visits, allow for tendering and weather, and plan your return around the ship’s all-aboard time.
Then choose the ship
Once the route works, compare ship size, space per passenger, crew ratios, dining, pools and what the fare actually includes.
Where do Australia and New Zealand cruises go?
Some sailings stay along Australia’s coast or focus on Tasmania. Others cross the Tasman Sea to visit New Zealand’s North and South islands, often with scenic cruising in Fiordland. Longer routes can connect with Asia or South Pacific islands. Check the actual ports rather than assuming both countries are included.
When should I cruise Australia and New Zealand?
Many New Zealand and southern Australian voyages sail during the Southern Hemisphere spring and summer. Tropical northern Australia has different conditions from Tasmania or New Zealand, so choose dates for the specific route. Weather can change tender calls and scenic passages.
How long are Australia and New Zealand cruises?
Options range from short Australian coastal getaways to New Zealand voyages lasting around two weeks and much longer round-Australia or repositioning journeys. A Tasman Sea crossing adds sea days. Compare time ashore and scenic cruising as well as total nights.
Where do cruises depart from?
Common gateways include Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Auckland, with some routes using Fremantle for Perth or other ports. Confirm the terminal rather than relying on the city name, and compare flights at both ends of a one-way voyage.
Is Milford Sound a port stop?
On many large-ship itineraries, Milford Sound and other Fiordland sounds are scenic cruising viewed from the ship, rather than a place to disembark. Check the sailing’s schedule for any separate shore arrangements. Weather and operating conditions can affect the planned passage.
Can I explore ports independently?
Some city calls suit independent exploring, but distances and tendering vary. Lyttelton is the gateway for Christchurch, Port Chalmers serves Dunedin, and Fremantle is separate from Perth. Check the actual berth, transport and all-aboard deadline before planning an outing.
