Malta Departure & port-visit guide

Valletta

Harbour gardens, ancient objects, waterfront warehouses.

Choose Grand Harbour views from Upper Barrakka, available archaeological galleries in Auberge de Provence or a public stretch of Valletta Waterfront. Each gives a local focus. Mdina, Gozo, Comino and other island outings require separate connections and return plans. Joining passengers also need confirmed airport, baggage and cruise entrance arrangements.

Explore on your own

Choose a plan for the stops, food, walking and extra costs. Before sailing, arrange luggage storage and follow your cruise line’s check-in window and final boarding deadline. On a port call, use the ship’s all-aboard time to set your return.

Start with the time you actually have

On embarkation day, work back from your cruise line’s check-in window instead. Count from when you can get off the ship, or ashore by tender, to the all-aboard time, using ship time. Times on these plans are our estimates, with time to spare; they cannot promise a plan fits your sailing.

Short plans need up to 4 hours in total, medium up to 6, long more than 6. A plan with a connection still to confirm has no total.

Put your day on the map

Select a terminal or place to see its location and open directions.

Open Upper Barrakka gardens in Google Maps

Choose a place for its location, then open Google Maps for directions. Confirm the terminal on your cruise documents; a map result does not establish your ship’s berth or an accessible route.

Getting around

Local connections

The cruise operator lists the Barrakka lift, taxis and Route 130 between the waterfront and Valletta bus terminus. Confirm current operation, the complete route to and from your ship, accessible boarding, tickets and last return. Lascaris ferry departures and the upper-city bus terminus have separate roles; neither is the cruise joining point.

Valletta Cruise Port: airport and Barrakka lift connections

Protect the return

Our suggestion: confirm the actual passenger deadline, both connections, waiting and clearance. Published ticket prices and individual journey estimates do not establish a complete transfer allowance.

Airport arrival

The cruise operator identifies Malta International Airport and road or public-transport connections. Confirm current airport service, actual stops, pickup, luggage and the remaining connection to your assigned cruise entrance. Published driving or bus-leg estimates do not establish a complete airport-to-gangway allowance or current whole transfer fare.

A shared bus card for several travellers

Checked October 5, 2026: Malta Public Transport lists the 12 Single Day Journeys card at €19. It is shareable and valid for six months from first use; day-route journeys allow transfers within two hours. Night routes and Airport Direct use two journeys per trip. Confirm your chosen route and product before buying, and arrange the remaining connection between the waterfront and any airport or city bus stop separately.

Malta Public Transport: visitor ticket products

Airport Direct needs its own product check

Malta Public Transport lists Airport Direct TD4 for Valletta and the Gozo Fast Ferry area. It says Airport Direct is included with an Unlimited Travel Card, while passengers without one pay the applicable single fare using cash or contactless payment onboard. Check the exact card or bundle you hold and the current route, stop and fare. A bus serving the fast-ferry area does not include a Gozo ferry ticket or establish the final connection to your assigned cruise entrance.

Make room for lunch

Confirm the chosen place

Our suggestion: check the actual café or restaurant’s opening, ingredients, payment and complete bill. Public streets or exhibition access do not establish meal service; no current menu price or meal duration is researched here.

What costs extra?

Published information checked Oct 6, 2026. Confirm current prices before paying.

Option 2

Take a planned tour

Prefer an organized outing in Valletta? Browse tours with Viator, then check the exact meeting point, departure, inclusions and cancellation terms before booking.

Tour duration is only part of your time ashore. Allow for getting to the meeting point, early check-in, any transfers outside the tour and your return reserve. Confirm the ship’s clock, all-aboard time and any earlier last tender. These results have not been checked against your sailing.

Find tours for your port visit

Can I walk from the ship?

Before you go ashore

How long is the ship in port, and when is all-aboard?

Port hours vary by ship and date in Valletta. Check your sailing itinerary for scheduled arrival and departure, then the onboard app or daily notice for all-aboard, ship time and any last-tender deadline. Subtract clearance, both transfers and a return buffer before choosing an outing. Scheduled arrival is not your guaranteed time ashore.

What should I take ashore?

Take your ship card or wearable, the identification specified in the ship’s port briefing, any tour ticket and a way to pay. Save your terminal name, return deadline and ship’s emergency contact offline. Ask whether your original passport is required for this visit; do not assume a phone photo replaces required identification. Euros (EUR). The European Central Bank identifies Malta as using the euro. Confirm payment methods, the currency charged and the complete bill directly; no exchange rate or whole-day price is established.

How do I get off and back on the ship?

Wait for the ship’s announcement that passengers may go ashore. Follow its gangway, shuttle or tender instructions and any ticketing order. Keep your ship identification ready when leaving and returning. Allow for terminal access checks, queues and security screening before reboarding; tender passengers also need to meet the last return boat.

What should I know about safety around the port?

UK FCDO Malta guidance records pickpocketing on crowded buses and theft from parked cars, and advises keeping valuables in sight and taking care when using ATMs. It also notes poor road conditions in some areas. Check current local conditions and your ship’s briefing. No complete passenger-route safety assessment is established.

Starting or ending your cruise here

For embarkation, use your cruise line’s terminal and check-in instructions. After the cruise, allow for disembarkation, baggage collection and the airport transfer before airline check-in.

Where can I park, and what does it cost?

Confirm the full voyage separately. The operator lists quay, Atrium, MCP and nearby parking options, but its quay flat-rate terms exclude cruise operating hours. These are not confirmed whole-voyage cruise parking arrangements. Confirm overnight and full-stay permission, vehicle gate, reservation, restrictions and a complete quote directly before leaving a car; free street parking does not establish secure cruise storage.
