France Departure & port-visit guide

Marseille

Old Port quays, Mediterranean cultures, Le Panier.

Marseille’s Old Port, Mucem and Le Panier give a city visit three different focuses. Confirm MPCT or J4 before arranging both journeys; the Vieux-Port is not your cruise terminal. Cruises also start here, so keep airport arrival, luggage and check-in separate from port-call time. Calanques boats, Château d’If, Cassis and Aix-en-Provence need their own complete return assessment.

Start with the time you actually have

On embarkation day, work back from your cruise line’s check-in window instead. Count from when you can get off the ship, or ashore by tender, to the all-aboard time, using ship time. Times on these plans are our estimates, with time to spare; they cannot promise a plan fits your sailing.

Short plans need up to 4 hours in total, medium up to 6, long more than 6. A plan with a connection still to confirm has no total.

Put your day on the map

Select a terminal or place to see its location and open directions.

Open Marseille Vieux-Port in Google Maps

Choose a place for its location, then open Google Maps for directions. Confirm the terminal on your cruise documents; a map result does not establish your ship’s berth or an accessible route.

Getting around

Start from the actual passenger exit

The port distinguishes MPCT at Gate 4 on Chemin du Littoral from the separate J4 cruise terminal near the city center. Neither should be confused with the Vieux-Port sightseeing quays. Confirm your assigned berth, passenger exit, transfer pickup and return entrance with the ship.

Port of Marseille Fos: MPCT and separate J4 cruise terminal

Gate 4 shuttle and onward city connection

Tourism describes a free port shuttle on ship-call days, with a published 5–12-minute walk along the marked green line to its stop. The city pickup is at 9 Quai du Lazaret near Joliette. From Joliette, the published walk to Vieux-Port is about 25 minutes; these are separate legs, excluding the shuttle ride and waiting. Check the actual service and last return.

Protect the return

Our suggestion: check the actual passenger deadline and allow for both journeys, waiting and port checks. Published individual connection estimates do not establish the complete outing time; other routes and fares remain unverified.

Airport-to-station is only the first leg

Tourism estimates the airport-to-Saint-Charles shuttle at about 25 minutes in normal traffic, up to 50 minutes at rush hour. It explicitly says there is no direct public-transport connection to the cruise terminals. From Saint-Charles, Metro 2 toward Gèze reaches Joliette, then bus 35T serves Gate 4 on cruise days. Allow separately for connections and the remaining port approach. Checked Oct 5, 2026.

One RTM payment method can cover up to five travellers

RTM allows one contactless card or connected device to pay for up to five travellers, with a separate validation and confirmation for each person. Use the dedicated readers and validate again when boarding a connecting service with the same payment method. Keep that card or device available for inspection. RTM warns that another commercial network needs a new payment, so confirm any airport-coach fare separately. These rules do not establish transport from your assigned cruise berth.

RTM: bank-card validation and group travel

RTM bank-card travel still needs each tap

RTM supports contactless payment on its bus, tram and metro network and says the same payment support must be validated on every boarding, including transfers within that commercial network. One method can cover up to five riders. Present the card or device used for validation during inspection. Check the separate transfer from your assigned cruise terminal. Checked Oct 6, 2026.

Confirm the chosen place

Our suggestion: check the actual café or restaurant’s opening, ingredients, payment and complete bill. Public streets or museum access do not establish meal service; no current menu price or meal duration is researched here.

Option 2

Take a planned tour

Prefer an organized outing in Marseille? Browse tours with Viator, then check the exact meeting point, departure, inclusions and cancellation terms before booking.

Tour duration is only part of your time ashore. Allow for getting to the meeting point, early check-in, any transfers outside the tour and your return reserve. Confirm the ship’s clock, all-aboard time and any earlier last tender. These results have not been checked against your sailing.

Can I walk from the ship?

For MPCT/Gate 4, tourism gives a 5–12-minute approach to the free-shuttle stop, followed by a separate journey to Joliette and about 25 minutes walking onward to Vieux-Port. Bus 35T instead reaches Gate 4, still 600 m–2.5 km from the boarding platform depending on berth. These estimates do not apply to J4 or establish a full gangway-to-sight route.

Before you go ashore

How long is the ship in port, and when is all-aboard?

Port hours vary by ship and date in Marseille. Check your sailing itinerary for scheduled arrival and departure, then the onboard app or daily notice for all-aboard, ship time and any last-tender deadline. Subtract clearance, both transfers and a return buffer before choosing an outing. Scheduled arrival is not your guaranteed time ashore.

What should I take ashore?

Take your ship card or wearable, the identification specified in the ship’s port briefing, any tour ticket and a way to pay. Save your terminal name, return deadline and ship’s emergency contact offline. Ask whether your original passport is required for this visit; do not assume a phone photo replaces required identification. Euros (EUR). How do I get off and back on the ship?

Wait for the ship’s announcement that passengers may go ashore. Follow its gangway, shuttle or tender instructions and any ticketing order. Keep your ship identification ready when leaving and returning. Allow for terminal access checks, queues and security screening before reboarding; tender passengers also need to meet the last return boat.

What should I know about safety around the port?

UK FCDO France guidance advises protecting belongings and checking transport operators during strikes or disruption. Follow current local warnings and your ship’s briefing. No blanket passenger-route safety rating is established; sea conditions and regional outings require separate checks.

Starting or ending your cruise here

For embarkation, use your cruise line’s terminal and check-in instructions. After the cruise, allow for disembarkation, baggage collection and the airport transfer before airline check-in.

Where can I park, and what does it cost?

Confirm the full voyage separately. MPCT publishes voyage parking and online booking. Confirm the current arrangement, your full dates, exact terminal, vehicle restrictions and complete charge with MPCT. Its cruise parking excludes Corsica and Maghreb ferry passengers. Do not treat city or museum parking as permission to park for a voyage.

How do I get from the airport to the terminal?

Marseille Provence Airport (MRS). Tourism lists cruise-line transfers and taxis from Marseille Provence Airport, and warns that public transport is not a direct airport-to-cruise-terminal connection. Confirm your assigned terminal, current service, luggage, waiting and complete fare; an airport-to-station ride is only one part of the journey. How does luggage drop-off work?

MPCT describes staffed baggage registration, screening and delivery to the ship. Confirm when and where to drop luggage for your actual terminal and sailing; this does not establish early acceptance or public luggage storage. Attach your cruise luggage tags before handover. Keep travel documents, medication and valuables in your carry-on. Baggage drop-off is not a promise of early boarding or all-day luggage storage.

A complete return assessment

Our suggestion: assess actual departures, weather, boarding, stops and both journeys for the Calanques, Frioul, Château d’If, Cassis and Aix-en-Provence. A boat’s advertised duration or a regional drive is not the complete cruise-to-cruise allowance.
