United States Departure & port-visit guide

Juneau

One main outing, time for town.

Juneau can be a waterfront and culture day or the starting point for a glacier outing. Check your dock before choosing a meeting place: the downtown berths and AJ Dock are different starting points. Pick one main outing, then fit food and a town walk around the ship's deadline.

Option 1

Explore on your own

Choose a plan for the stops, food, walking and extra costs. Before sailing, arrange luggage storage and follow your cruise line’s check-in window and final boarding deadline. On a port call, use the ship’s all-aboard time to set your return.

Start with the time you actually have

On embarkation day, work back from your cruise line’s check-in window instead. Count from when you can get off the ship, or ashore by tender, to the all-aboard time, using ship time. Times on these plans are our estimates, with time to spare; they cannot promise a plan fits your sailing.

Short plans need up to 4 hours in total, medium up to 6, long more than 6. A plan with a connection still to confirm has no total.

Put your day on the map

Select a terminal or place to see its location and open directions.

Open Downtown waterfront in Google Maps

Choose a place for its location, then open Google Maps for directions. Confirm the terminal on your cruise documents; a map result does not establish your ship’s berth or an accessible route.

Getting around

Airport buses need a separate walk

Checked October 6, 2026: Capital Transit has suspended Route 6 Airport Connector until further notice. Routes 3 and 4 use Glacier Highway stops near Shell Simmons Drive, with a published 0.4-mile walk to or from the airport. For downtown, use the stop outside NuVision Credit Union; the opposite Wells Fargo stop serves the Mendenhall Valley direction. Check current alerts and luggage needs. This airport connection does not include the route from downtown to your assigned cruise entrance.

Capital Transit: airport connector suspension and alternative stops

Dock connection plus both glacier transfers

Check your assigned dock or tender landing against the operator’s actual meeting point. If using the AJ Dock shuttle, confirm both services and the onward meeting connection at the Goldbelt Tram area. Arrange outward and return glacier transport, pickup waits and the final dock approach; check current Forest Service access before leaving.

Seawalk and main-shack return

Save your assigned dock or tender landing and its return instructions. Walk a manageable seawalk section and use Tracy’s main shack at South Franklin Street only if serving. If using the AJ Dock shuttle, confirm the return pickup and final service at the Goldbelt Tram area. Include food queues, the dock approach and any tender waits; a mountain tram ride is not required.

Plan your spending

Price the complete glacier outing

Ask whether a quoted outing includes both transfers and any site admission. Compare the total for your group, and confirm the amount of time actually available at the glacier rather than judging only by the advertised tour length.

A simpler town budget

Our lower-spend suggestion is a self-guided waterfront walk with one food stop. Museum admission, restaurant purchases and organized activities have their own charges; check the current menu or ticket price before committing.

Option 2

Take a planned tour

Prefer an organized outing in Juneau? Browse tours with Viator, then check the exact meeting point, departure, inclusions and cancellation terms before booking.

Tour duration is only part of your time ashore. Allow for getting to the meeting point, early check-in, any transfers outside the tour and your return reserve. Confirm the ship’s clock, all-aboard time and any earlier last tender. These results have not been checked against your sailing.

Find tours for your port visit

Search up to one year ahead. Schedules are indicative; confirm available departure times and your group’s final price on Viator.

Can I walk from the ship?

Downtown berths offer a central start. Franklin Dock and AJ Dock add travel into town; confirm any AJ shuttle. If tendering, use the landing and return instructions from your ship.

First steps ashore

Where you arrive

Ships may dock or tender here. Your sailing’s arrival arrangement determines the starting point, transport connection and time needed to get back aboard.

Your ship confirms the arrival pier and any tender arrangements for your sailing.

Before you go ashore

How long is the ship in port, and when is all-aboard?

Port hours vary by ship and date in Juneau. Check your sailing itinerary for scheduled arrival and departure, then the onboard app or daily notice for all-aboard, ship time and any last-tender deadline. Subtract clearance, both transfers and a return buffer before choosing an outing. Scheduled arrival is not your guaranteed time ashore.

Can I explore independently?

Our suggestion is to schedule the glacier outing first with a confirmed return, then choose lunch and a shorter waterfront walk using the remaining time. Leave enough margin to reach the actual dock, especially from AJ Dock. This is our planning suggestion. Compare a ship excursion or reputable independent tour for more complicated outings, including the meeting point and return arrangements.

What should I take ashore?

Take your ship card or wearable, the identification specified in the ship’s port briefing, any tour ticket and a way to pay. Save your terminal name, return deadline and ship’s emergency contact offline. Ask whether your original passport is required for this visit; do not assume a phone photo replaces required identification.

How do I get off and back on the ship?

Wait for the ship’s announcement that passengers may go ashore. Follow its gangway, shuttle or tender instructions and any ticketing order. Keep your ship identification ready when leaving and returning. Allow for terminal access checks, queues and security screening before reboarding; tender passengers also need to meet the last return boat.

What should I know about safety around the port?

For Mendenhall-area trails outside the Juneau town plan, Alaska Fish and Game advises making noise to avoid surprising bears, keeping your distance and securing food and rubbish. Check Southeast Alaska land and marine forecasts and any site or operator closures before departure. Regional wildlife and weather advice does not establish a reviewed passenger route, a sighting guarantee or suitable conditions for a boat trip.

Glacier, culture and waterfront choices

Mendenhall viewpoints

The visitor-centre area and Photo Point offer glacier views; Nugget Falls is a separate trail option. Check current Forest Service conditions before departure, because flooding or trail work can affect access. A viewpoint visit is not a walk onto the ice.

Travel Juneau: Mendenhall Glacier and current visitor advisory

Goldbelt Tram: check reopening first

The operator's Sep 21, 2026 notice says tram service is temporarily closed while assessments continue. Its lower terminal remains available for coffee, cultural carving and weaving experiences, and shopping. Do not build the day around a mountain ride without a reopening confirmation.

Goldbelt Tram: operating updates and waterfront location

Alaska State Museum

Use the museum as an indoor alternative and follow its official Visit Us link for the date's hours and admission. It is a separate destination from the waterfront tram terminal, so include the walk or ride in your plan.

Short call or changed weather

Keep the day downtown with the museum, seawalk and a meal. Bring a rain layer and shoes with grip, and shorten the walk if conditions or tender queues reduce the time available.
