United States Departure & port-visit guide

Honolulu

A palace, a shoreline, a memorial.

Choose a downtown visit anchored by ʻIolani Palace, a Waikīkī shoreline break or a focused Pearl Harbor visit. Honolulu also starts cruises: use the line’s assigned Pier 2 or Pier 11 entrance and keep its check-in window clear. A port call and an embarkation day need different sightseeing budgets, especially when a reserved program or road transfer is involved.

Choose a plan for the stops, food, walking and extra costs. Before sailing, arrange luggage storage and follow your cruise line’s check-in window and final boarding deadline. On a port call, use the ship’s all-aboard time to set your return.

Start with the time you actually have

On embarkation day, work back from your cruise line’s check-in window instead. Count from when you can get off the ship, or ashore by tender, to the all-aboard time, using ship time. Times on these plans are our estimates, with time to spare; they cannot promise a plan fits your sailing.

Short plans need up to 4 hours in total, medium up to 6, long more than 6. A plan with a connection still to confirm has no total.

Put your day on the map

Select a terminal or place to see its location and open directions.

Open ʻIolani Palace in Google Maps

Choose a place for its location, then open Google Maps for directions. Confirm the terminal on your cruise documents; a map result does not establish your ship’s berth or an accessible route.

Getting around

Arrange both road connections

Our suggestion: choose one district or attraction and confirm both journeys from the actual passenger entrance. Current shuttle service, terminal-to-attraction distances and transfer times have not been verified here.

Cash fares and HOLO passes differ

Checked October 5, 2026: TheBus lists a USD 3.25 cash fare for each boarding, with exact payment and no transfer. Its HOLO products include a USD 3 two-hour pass and a USD 7.50 pass valid for 24 hours from first tap; the card has a separate USD 2 initial fee. Check the actual route and current product before travelling. These fares do not establish a cruise shuttle or a direct terminal-to-attraction journey.

TheBus: fares effective July 1, 2026

Confirm luggage fits the bus rules

TheBus allows one standard medium suitcase and one smaller carry-on bag or carry-on backpack per passenger under its published rules. You must carry and stow them in one boarding trip, fitting them under or in front of your seat, between your feet or on your lap. Bags cannot block aisles or occupy extra seats. Confirm the current rules and whether your luggage fits before planning an airport or cruise-terminal bus journey; arrange another transfer if it does not.

Choose a nearby venue

Our suggestion: keep a food break where you are already visiting. Check the menu, ingredients, dietary needs, payment and service time directly. No particular restaurant or current menu price is researched here.

First steps ashore

Use the assigned Honolulu terminal entrance

Ships dock at the assigned Pier 2 or Pier 11 cruise terminal. Pier 2 is primary, but use the exact terminal and entrance confirmed by your line.

Before you go ashore

How long is the ship in port, and when is all-aboard?

Port hours vary by ship and date in Honolulu. Check your sailing itinerary for scheduled arrival and departure, then the onboard app or daily notice for all-aboard, ship time and any last-tender deadline. Subtract clearance, both transfers and a return buffer before choosing an outing. Scheduled arrival is not your guaranteed time ashore.

What should I take ashore?

Take your ship card or wearable, the identification specified in the ship’s port briefing, any tour ticket and a way to pay. Save your terminal name, return deadline and ship’s emergency contact offline. Ask whether your original passport is required for this visit; do not assume a phone photo replaces required identification. US dollars (USD). Confirm the complete ticket, transport and meal bill, including any taxes or additional charges, before paying.

How do I get off and back on the ship?

Wait for the ship’s announcement that passengers may go ashore. Follow its gangway, shuttle or tender instructions and any ticketing order. Keep your ship identification ready when leaving and returning. Allow for terminal access checks, queues and security screening before reboarding; tender passengers also need to meet the last return boat.

What should I know about safety around the port?

State of Hawaii Ocean Safety advises checking with lifeguards about current conditions and following posted warnings. A Waikīkī shoreline visit does not establish that swimming is safe. Check current local instructions; no terminal-to-attraction walking route has been assessed here.

Cruise-date parking remains unverified. Overnight permission, reservations, the terminal connection and current prices have not been verified for either cruise entrance. Confirm the facility and all cruise dates before leaving a vehicle.

How do I get from the airport to the terminal?

Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL). The airport lists taxis by the center median in front of baggage claim, with dispatchers assisting passengers. Confirm your arrival terminal and the ride to the exact cruise entrance; no current journey time or fare is established here. Our suggestion: choose one district or attraction and confirm both journeys from the actual passenger entrance. How does luggage drop-off work?

Confirm the designated baggage drop-off at your assigned terminal and the time your sailing accepts bags. Attach your cruise luggage tags before handover. Starting your Honolulu cruise

Confirm bags and storage with the line

Hawaii DOT directs cruise baggage-storage inquiries to the cruise line. Bag acceptance hours, storage availability and charges remain sailing-specific or unverified here; do not assume the terminal will hold bags while you sightsee.

Keep departure day simple

Our suggestion: do Pearl Harbor or the longer Waikīkī outing on another day before embarkation. A reserved visit does not change the final check-in deadline.
