Mexico Port of call

Cozumel

Start with your pier.

Your arrival pier is the first thing to check. Punta Langosta puts you beside San Miguel; the southern terminals need a different plan. Choose a town visit or a beach stop around your actual time ashore.

Start with the time you actually have

Count from when you can get off the ship, or ashore by tender, to the all-aboard time, using ship time. Times on these plans are our estimates, with time to spare; they cannot promise a plan fits your sailing.

Short plans need up to 4 hours in total, medium up to 6, long more than 6. A plan with a connection still to confirm has no total.

Getting around

If you need accessible transport

Arrange any vehicle before sailing. Puerta Maya’s operator lists taxi contacts +52 987 872 1130 and +52 987 872 1167. Ask specifically about ramps or lifts, your chair’s dimensions, travelling while seated in it, and pickup at your assigned pier. These contacts do not establish accessible-vehicle availability.

A mainland ferry adds another boarding deadline

Ultramar lists the Cozumel passenger departure at Terminal Marítima San Miguel on Avenida Rafael Melgar and the Playa del Carmen arrival at Terminal Marítima NAVEGA. Checked October 6, 2026: the operator requires arrival at the ferry terminal 30 minutes before departure and says schedules and rates can change. Verify both sailings for your date and the connection from your assigned cruise pier. This ferry boarding allowance is not the crossing time or a complete mainland outing budget.

Booking & access

Check the taxi rate posted at your arrival pier. Puerta Maya’s directory lists taxi contacts at +52 987 8721130 and +52 987 8721167; it does not promise an accessible vehicle. Ask about availability, boarding, chair dimensions and both pickups before booking. Park access needs separate confirmation. Checked Oct 6, 2026.

Take a planned tour

Prefer an organized outing in Cozumel? Browse tours with Viator, then check the exact meeting point, departure, inclusions and cancellation terms before booking.

Tour duration is only part of your time ashore. Allow for getting to the meeting point, early check-in, any transfers outside the tour and your return reserve. Confirm the ship’s clock, all-aboard time and any earlier last tender. These results have not been checked against your sailing.

Before you go ashore

How long is the ship in port, and when is all-aboard?

Port hours vary by ship and date in Cozumel. Check your sailing itinerary for scheduled arrival and departure, then the onboard app or daily notice for all-aboard, ship time and any last-tender deadline. Subtract clearance, both transfers and a return buffer before choosing an outing. Scheduled arrival is not your guaranteed time ashore.

Can I explore independently?

Our suggestion: San Miguel and the waterfront work as a compact independent day. Stay on the island for a short call; a mainland trip adds ferry connections and more ways to lose return time.

What should I take ashore?

Take your ship card or wearable, the identification specified in the ship’s port briefing, any tour ticket and a way to pay. Save your terminal name, return deadline and ship’s emergency contact offline. Ask whether your original passport is required for this visit; do not assume a phone photo replaces required identification. Agree the fare and currency before leaving. Ask whether a taxi quote covers the whole vehicle and the return trip. Follow the ship’s stated all-aboard time; do not assume your phone uses ship time.

How do I get off and back on the ship?

Wait for the ship’s announcement that passengers may go ashore. Follow its gangway, shuttle or tender instructions and any ticketing order. Keep your ship identification ready when leaving and returning. Allow for terminal access checks, queues and security screening before reboarding; tender passengers also need to meet the last return boat.

What should I know about safety around the port?

Keep valuables discreet, carry only the cash needed and watch bags in public places. Review current regional travel advice and your ship’s briefing before independent trips. Confirm which Cozumel pier your ship uses and arrange the return to that pier; these national precautions do not verify terminal-to-town walking routes.

A few hours ashore

This is a suggested plan, not a timed excursion. Check your arrival, all-aboard time and actual transfer time before deciding how much fits.

Our suggested town day

Head to San Miguel, explore the waterfront and leave time for a food stop. From the southern piers, arrange the taxi both ways. Keep a separate allowance for the pier walk, security and queues; your all-aboard time decides when to turn back.

Before you leave the ship

Save your return details

Take the pier name, port-agent contact and the ship’s all-aboard time with you. A shop, beach or taxi driver cannot confirm your ship’s deadline.

Keep a mainland trip separate

Do not add a mainland visit to this short island plan. Confirm every ferry and onward connection, cancellation terms and the operator’s missed-ship policy before booking.

What still needs checking

Exact taxi fares, accessible vehicles, measured terminal-to-museum walking routes and the full Punta Sur return journey still need checking. Chankanaab taxi estimates are listed above; confirm them for your actual pier and sailing date.
