Costa Maya

Pick your kind of beach day.

Costa Maya’s cruise port and neighboring Mahahual are different starting points for a day ashore. Choose a town beach with pay-as-you-go food, or a reserved beach-club day that bundles transport and lunch. Check exactly what your booking includes.

Start with the time you actually have

Count from when you can get off the ship, or ashore by tender, to the all-aboard time, using ship time. Times on these plans are our estimates, with time to spare; they cannot promise a plan fits your sailing.

Short plans need up to 4 hours in total, medium up to 6, long more than 6. A plan with a connection still to confirm has no total.

Put your day on the map

Select a terminal or place to see its location and open directions.

Open Costa Maya cruise port in Google Maps

Choose a place for its location, then open Google Maps for directions. Confirm the terminal on your cruise documents; a map result does not establish your ship’s berth or an accessible route.

Getting around

Use the booked resort’s meeting instructions

For booked Maya Chan guests, the resort says its transport is included: follow its instructions through the port complex to the meeting point, where its representative checks the reservation and arranges a local taxi. The operator says guests do not need to buy a separate ride into Mahahual first. This arrangement applies to Maya Chan bookings. Confirm the current meeting point and your return time with staff, including the walk back through the cruise complex.

Maya Chan Beach: guest transportation

Mahahual beach pickup

Mahahual’s town beach is outside the cruise complex. Choose the business and access point before agreeing a ride, and confirm the return pickup and whether the quote covers your group or each person. The Maya Chan reservation transfer is a different arrangement; a ride to town does not establish entry to that resort. Checked October 6, 2026.

Reserved resort pickup and earlier return

Use Maya Chan’s current Getting Here instructions to reach its uniformed representative, who checks reservations and arranges a local taxi. The operator says a separate ride into Mahahual is unnecessary. Agree your preferred return with staff and check its last-taxi information against the ship’s deadline; the return still leaves the cruise-complex walk to the gangway. Checked October 6, 2026.

Town lunch and return ride

Choose a restaurant in Mahahual after checking its kitchen service, seating and the full bill. Agree a nearby drop-off and an exact return pickup with your driver, and check entry access if walking is a concern. Keep the meal separate from Maya Chan’s reserved package and leave time to walk back through the cruise complex. Checked October 6, 2026.

Make room for lunch

Eating in Mahahual

For local flavors, look for cochinita pibil or ceviche on the menu. Our advice: check the day’s kitchen hours, portion prices and service charges before choosing a table. Food is a separate purchase unless your package includes it.

Plan your spending

Our advice: total the return ride, chairs, shade, food and drinks before comparing a beach package with paying separately in town.

Read the reservation terms

Our advice: check cancellation terms and what happens if your ship misses the port. A published day-pass price does not confirm availability for your sailing.

Option 2

Take a planned tour

Prefer an organized outing in Costa Maya? Browse tours with Viator, then check the exact meeting point, departure, inclusions and cancellation terms before booking.

Tour duration is only part of your time ashore. Allow for getting to the meeting point, early check-in, any transfers outside the tour and your return reserve. Confirm the ship’s clock, all-aboard time and any earlier last tender. These results have not been checked against your sailing.

Can I walk from the ship?

Mahahual is outside the cruise-port complex. Arrange transport to the specific beach or restaurant you want; a ride to town does not serve every beach club.

Before you go ashore

How long is the ship in port, and when is all-aboard?

Port hours vary by ship and date in Costa Maya. Check your sailing itinerary for scheduled arrival and departure, then the onboard app or daily notice for all-aboard, ship time and any last-tender deadline. Subtract clearance, both transfers and a return buffer before choosing an outing. Scheduled arrival is not your guaranteed time ashore.

Can I explore independently?

Our suggestion: spend the outing at one beach spot, eat nearby and use the return pickup you arranged. Leave time for the walk back through the port. This is our planning suggestion. Compare a ship excursion or reputable independent tour for more complicated outings, including the meeting point and return arrangements.

What should I take ashore?

Take your ship card or wearable, the identification specified in the ship’s port briefing, any tour ticket and a way to pay. Save your terminal name, return deadline and ship’s emergency contact offline. Ask whether your original passport is required for this visit; do not assume a phone photo replaces required identification. Mexican pesos. Some operators publish U.S. dollar prices. Our advice: confirm the currency and total before paying.

How do I get off and back on the ship?

Wait for the ship’s announcement that passengers may go ashore. Follow its gangway, shuttle or tender instructions and any ticketing order. Keep your ship identification ready when leaving and returning. Allow for terminal access checks, queues and security screening before reboarding; tender passengers also need to meet the last return boat.

What should I know about safety around the port?

Keep valuables discreet and bags attended, and plan independent travel in daylight where possible. Check current regional advice and the ship’s briefing before leaving the port complex. Mahahual and farther excursions need a separate return plan; national crime precautions do not establish the safety of a particular walking route or boat trip.
