Explore on your own

Choose a plan for the stops, food, walking and extra costs. Before sailing, arrange luggage storage and follow your cruise line’s check-in window and final boarding deadline. On a port call, use the ship’s all-aboard time to set your return.

Start with the time you actually have

On embarkation day, work back from your cruise line’s check-in window instead. Count from when you can get off the ship, or ashore by tender, to the all-aboard time, using ship time. Times on these plans are our estimates, with time to spare; they cannot promise a plan fits your sailing.

Short plans need up to 4 hours in total, medium up to 6, long more than 6. A plan with a connection still to confirm has no total.

Put your day on the map

Select a terminal or place to see its location and open directions.

Open Nyhavn Copenhagen in Google Maps

Choose a place for its location, then open Google Maps for directions. Confirm the terminal on your cruise documents; a map result does not establish your ship’s berth or an accessible route.

Getting around

Local connections

CMP lists public-transport access, but the combination depends on the terminal. Check the current bus, metro or train connection and complete path, or book a taxi with the exact terminal named.

Copenhagen: passenger arrival

Ocean Quay to the city

Tourism lists bus 25 on cruise-call days, or year-round bus 164 toward Ballerup, connecting Oceankaj with Orientkaj and metro M4. Its estimates are about 20 minutes to Kongens Nytorv or 30 minutes to Central Station. Bus 25 is described as ending an hour before the last ship departs, so check the actual service before planning a late return. Confirm today’s zone fare. Checked Oct 5, 2026.

Visit Copenhagen: terminal-specific transit connections (checked Oct 5, 2026)

Langelinie and Nordre Toldbod differ

For Langelinie, tourism describes about a 5-minute approach to Indiakaj bus 27 or about 15 minutes walking to Østerport. From Nordre Toldbod it describes about 14 minutes walking to Marmorkirken metro. These are station/stop approaches, not complete attraction routes or verified step-free connections. Check the terminal named on your sailing.

The harbour bus is part of public transport

Visit Copenhagen describes the yellow harbour buses as using regular public-transport tickets, with services along the harbour toward Orientkaj and the southern waterfront. Check the current stops, direction, zones and departures before choosing this option. A harbour-bus stop is separate from the assigned cruise terminal: allow for the connection to the pier and confirm your final return with the ship’s deadline in mind.

Our suggestion: choose a café or smørrebrød stop near the selected visit and confirm the menu and payment. Nyhavn restaurant tables are optional, not part of a booked canal cruise.

Option 2

Take a planned tour

Prefer an organized outing in Copenhagen? Browse tours with Viator, then check the exact meeting point, departure, inclusions and cancellation terms before booking.

Tour duration is only part of your time ashore. Allow for getting to the meeting point, early check-in, any transfers outside the tour and your return reserve. Confirm the ship’s clock, all-aboard time and any earlier last tender. These results have not been checked against your sailing.

Can I walk from the ship?

Match the route to Ocean Quay, Langelinie or Nordre Toldbod. Tourism describes different bus/metro connections and station approaches: Langelinie to Østerport about 15 minutes walking, versus Nordre Toldbod to Marmorkirken about 14 minutes. Ocean Quay uses a bus connection toward Orientkaj. These published legs do not complete the routes to Nyhavn, King’s Garden or Rosenborg.

Other outings: Plan separately. Tivoli, canal cruises, Louisiana and castles beyond the city have their own entry and journeys. Cruises starting here require the actual line’s terminal and check-in instructions.

Use your actual terminal. Any quoted walk starts at the location named, not automatically at the gangway. Allow for port access, weather and your walking pace.

Before you go ashore

How long is the ship in port, and when is all-aboard?

Port hours vary by ship and date in Copenhagen. Check your sailing itinerary for scheduled arrival and departure, then the onboard app or daily notice for all-aboard, ship time and any last-tender deadline. Subtract clearance, both transfers and a return buffer before choosing an outing. Scheduled arrival is not your guaranteed time ashore.

Can I explore independently?

Our suggestion: choose one of the three activities below, confirm current entry and both connections, and use your ship’s actual all-aboard or last-tender deadline.

What should I take ashore?

Take your ship card or wearable, the identification specified in the ship’s port briefing, any tour ticket and a way to pay. Save your terminal name, return deadline and ship’s emergency contact offline. Ask whether your original passport is required for this visit; do not assume a phone photo replaces required identification. Danish kroner (DKK). Confirm the quoted currency, entry and both transport charges before paying. Optional purchases are separate.

How do I get off and back on the ship?

Wait for the ship’s announcement that passengers may go ashore. Follow its gangway, shuttle or tender instructions and any ticketing order. Keep your ship identification ready when leaving and returning. Allow for terminal access checks, queues and security screening before reboarding; tender passengers also need to meet the last return boat.

What should I know about safety around the port?

A walkable location is not a safety assessment. We have not completed a route-specific security review around Copenhagen’s terminals. Before leaving, check current local or government advice and the ship’s port briefing; ask about your intended route and use recognized transport for unfamiliar areas.
