Start with the coast or the islands, not the continent
Africa and the Indian Ocean cover several sailing regions. A West African port day, a Cape Town turnaround and a Seychelles tender are not interchangeable. Choose the stretch of coast first, then compare flights and sea days.
West Africa
Calls such as Dakar, Banjul, Abidjan, Takoradi and Lomé are usually part of a longer coastwise or repositioning voyage. Time ashore can be short, and the pier may sit away from the sights. Check transport, port hours and the return time before booking a distant outing.
Southern Africa
Cape Town and Durban are embarkation cities as well as calls. Walvis Bay, Lüderitz and the Garden Route ports are different kinds of stops. A scenic or expedition day is not a city morning. Compare which nights you are in port and which nights you are at sea.
East Africa and the islands
Mombasa, Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam, Madagascar, Mauritius, Réunion, Mayotte and the Seychelles can appear on one extended route or on a shorter island cruise from Port Louis. Many smaller landings use tenders. Confirm the landing place and what is realistic in the published hours.

Africa & Indian Ocean departure ports
These ports are marked as places a cruise can start. Long-haul flights often need a hotel night. Confirm the terminal and whether the sailing is round-trip or one-way before you book the return.
Plan for the landing, not just the country name
A tender can shorten the day, and a beach landing may have fewer cars than a city port. Check where you go ashore and how you get back. Wildlife, a city and a lagoon are different outings: none of them is guaranteed by the port name.
Then choose the ship
Once the route works, compare ship size, space per passenger, crew ratios, dining, pools and what the fare actually includes.
Where do Africa and Indian Ocean cruises go?
Routes can follow the West African coast, sail around Southern Africa, or stay among East African ports and Indian Ocean islands such as Madagascar, Mauritius, Réunion and the Seychelles. Few voyages do all of that. Compare the actual calls and the sea days between them.
Where do these cruises depart from?
Cape Town, Durban and Port Louis are embarkation ports in this catalog. Other sailings only call. Repositioning voyages may start on another continent. Confirm the embarkation city, the flight and any hotel night before you book onward travel.
When is a practical time to go?
Seasons are not the same in Dakar, Cape Town and the Seychelles. Compare heat, rain and wind for the specific coast and dates. A calm day in one port does not describe the whole voyage.
Will every island call dock at a pier?
No. Some island and beach calls use tenders, and the landing may have limited transport. Check the berth or tender plan and the ship’s return deadline. Rough seas can cancel a planned landing.
How long are these cruises?
A regional island voyage can be about a week. A coastwise or repositioning route is often longer and spends more days at sea. Compare island or city calls with the total length, not the title alone.
Are the Indian Ocean islands part of an Asia cruise?
Ports filed here stay on this guide, including Indian Ocean islands in African waters. India, Sri Lanka and the Maldives are on the Asia guide when that is their region. A voyage that visits both can appear on both guides: read the day-by-day route.
