Royal Caribbean or Carnival: where should you start?

Start with Royal Caribbean if your wish list includes a specific attraction such as FlowRider or an AquaTheater show. Start with Carnival if included casual food spots and its kids’ programs are high on your list. Then check the actual ship: neither line puts every attraction or restaurant on every vessel.

Our recommendation is a way to narrow the search, not a claim that one line is always better. The best choice is the ship and sailing that fit your family and your complete budget.

Activities: pick the ship before the logo

Royal Caribbean’s activities vary considerably by vessel. Its fare-inclusions page lists selected-ship attractions, including waterslides, climbing, FlowRider and bumper cars. Ice shows and AquaTheater performances also depend on the ship.

Carnival has its own ship-specific draws. Mardi Gras lists WaterWorks and Playlist Productions; BOLT is listed on Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee. Seeing an attraction in an advertisement does not mean it is on the ship you are booking. Check its availability, cost and rider restrictions before promising it to the kids.

Food: what can you eat without paying extra?

Carnival lists several casual food options within its fare, including Guy’s Burger Joint and BlueIguana Cantina on selected ships. That can be useful if your family prefers quick lunches between activities. Check the venue list for the particular vessel, because restaurant names, hours and charges vary.

Royal Caribbean includes its main dining room, Windjammer buffet and selected casual dining. Specialty dining is an optional extra. Compare the included places you would actually use rather than the total restaurant count: ten venues do not help your budget if your favorites carry a charge.

Families: ages matter more than a “family-friendly” label

Carnival’s Camp Ocean groups children ages 2–11 into age bands. Its youth-program page also lists separate activities for older children and teens. Ask about opening hours and chargeable childcare sessions for your sailing.

Royal Caribbean includes Adventure Ocean programming. For younger children, verify the age requirements, nursery availability and charges on the ship you are considering.

Both deserve a place on a family shortlist. If you have a toddler or children in different age groups, confirm the details before choosing based on a pool photo.

Which is cheaper?

There is no permanent winner. Compare the same dates, number of nights, cabin type and guest count. Add gratuities, the drinks and internet you want, specialty meals, excursions and transport to the port.

Our verdict

  • Choose Royal Caribbean when a verified attraction or show on your shortlisted ship is the deciding factor.
  • Choose Carnival when its particular ship’s included food and youth-program options suit your household.
  • Choose the better complete quote when both ships offer what you need.
  • For a quieter trip, compare the vessel, sailing length and travel dates instead of relying on a brand stereotype.

Frequently asked questions

Is Carnival only for parties?

That label is too broad to choose a vacation by. Look at the ship’s facilities, itinerary, trip length and dates. Carnival also offers supervised children’s programs.

Is Royal Caribbean always more expensive?

No fixed ranking can answer that. Compare equivalent cabins and departures, then include the extras you plan to buy.

Are these all-inclusive cruises?

A standard fare does not cover every expense. Check your quote for drinks, Wi-Fi, gratuities, specialty dining and other extras.
