Antigua and Barbuda Port of call

St. John's

Quays, Caribbean food or sand.

St. John’s works well for a waterfront walk and a Caribbean lunch close to the ship. For beach time, compare nearby Fort James with the more developed Dickenson Bay and arrange your return ride before leaving town.

Start with the time you actually have

Count from when you can get off the ship, or ashore by tender, to the all-aboard time, using ship time. Times on these plans are our estimates, with time to spare; they cannot promise a plan fits your sailing.

Short plans need up to 4 hours in total, medium up to 6, long more than 6. A plan with a connection still to confirm has no total.

Put your day on the map

Select a terminal or place to see its location and open directions.

Open St. John’s cruise port in Google Maps

Choose a place for its location, then open Google Maps for directions. Confirm the terminal on your cruise documents; a map result does not establish your ship’s berth or an accessible route.

Getting around

A walk near the ship

Our suggestion: start with the quays, then decide whether to keep the day local or take a beach ride. Save directions offline so you can retrace your route.

Before getting in a taxi

Our advice: confirm whether the fare is per person or per vehicle, whether waiting is included, and where the driver will collect you. Ask about child seats or vehicle access if needed.

Check the bus station and the return service

Antigua’s tourism authority describes separate East and West bus stations in St. John’s, with routes serving villages around the island, and cautions that schedules can be unpredictable. Confirm which station and route serve your exact beach or destination, the current fare and the return service before leaving town. Keep enough margin to arrange another ride if needed and return to your actual cruise pier before the ship’s deadline.

Quay walk and return gate

Start from your ship’s actual exit onto the St. John’s waterfront, with Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay as the town area. Choose a manageable walk and check meal service before stopping; Cheers is listed downstairs at Heritage Quay, but that does not establish step-free access from your berth. Include the outward pier walk, the route between quays, food waiting and your return through the assigned gate. This town choice does not use either beach’s taxi transfer.

Fort James access and a return taxi

Confirm the Fort James beach access point, operating facilities and the walk from the vehicle onto the sand. Arrange both taxi legs from your actual St. John’s exit and agree the return time, reachable pickup and price for the whole party. Include vehicle waiting, both drives, beach access and the walk through the terminal on return. The tourism description of a beach near town is not a measured pier-to-beach route or a complete outing budget. Keep any quay browsing optional after returning.

Dickenson Bay access and pickup

Choose a specific public beach entrance at Dickenson Bay and ask about facilities and the path from the drop-off. Arrange outward and return taxis from your own St. John’s gate; agree the currency, party fare, pickup location and time before leaving. Include both drives, pickup waiting, changing and terminal re-entry. Resort surroundings do not give a day visitor permission to use hotel facilities. This is an alternative to Fort James, with its own return meeting point.

Option 2

Take a planned tour

Prefer an organized outing in St. John's? Browse tours with Viator, then check the exact meeting point, departure, inclusions and cancellation terms before booking.

Tour duration is only part of your time ashore. Allow for getting to the meeting point, early check-in, any transfers outside the tour and your return reserve. Confirm the ship’s clock, all-aboard time and any earlier last tender. These results have not been checked against your sailing.

Before you go ashore

How long is the ship in port, and when is all-aboard?

Port hours vary by ship and date in St. John's. Check your sailing itinerary for scheduled arrival and departure, then the onboard app or daily notice for all-aboard, ship time and any last-tender deadline. Subtract clearance, both transfers and a return buffer before choosing an outing. Scheduled arrival is not your guaranteed time ashore.

Can I explore independently?

Our suggestion: browse the quays, choose a Caribbean lunch near the port, then return with time for the terminal walk. This keeps transfers out of a short call. This is our planning suggestion. Compare a ship excursion or reputable independent tour for more complicated outings, including the meeting point and return arrangements.

What should I take ashore?

Take your ship card or wearable, the identification specified in the ship’s port briefing, any tour ticket and a way to pay. Save your terminal name, return deadline and ship’s emergency contact offline. Ask whether your original passport is required for this visit; do not assume a phone photo replaces required identification. EC dollars; US$ widely accepted. Ask which currency a menu or transport quote uses, and confirm the currency of any cash change.

How do I get off and back on the ship?

Wait for the ship’s announcement that passengers may go ashore. Follow its gangway, shuttle or tender instructions and any ticketing order. Keep your ship identification ready when leaving and returning. Allow for terminal access checks, queues and security screening before reboarding; tender passengers also need to meet the last return boat.

What should I know about safety around the port?

Use licensed taxis and main roads, avoid isolated places after dark and keep valuables secure. Serious crime has occurred. Beach currents can be strong, with lifeguards and warning flags absent at some sites. Check the chosen beach’s conditions; a town itinerary does not establish that a beach or its access route is safe.
