Sitka

Totem trails, raptors or time by the ship.

Choose a forest-and-totem walk, a visit to the Alaska Raptor Center, or a shorter day near the ship. Your starting point matters: a downtown tender arrival and a berth at Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal need different return plans.

Start with the time you actually have

Count from when you can get off the ship, or ashore by tender, to the all-aboard time, using ship time. Times on these plans are our estimates, with time to spare; they cannot promise a plan fits your sailing.

Short plans need up to 4 hours in total, medium up to 6, long more than 6. A plan with a connection still to confirm has no total.

Choose a place for its location, then open Google Maps for directions. Confirm the terminal on your cruise documents; a map result does not establish your ship’s berth or an accessible route.

Getting around

Terminal shuttle reservations

The operator lists about 15 minutes on the bus. A reservation gives entry to the queue, not an immediate departure. Some busy dates also need a return reservation. Confirm the pickup point, final service and any boarding assistance before leaving.

Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal: dock, tender and shuttle reservations

Choose one main outing

Our suggestion: set your return deadline first, then choose the park or Raptor Center as the main stop. Include queues, local connections and the route back aboard. Map pins locate attractions; they are not assigned pickup points.

The RIDE is a weekday local bus

Checked October 6, 2026: Sitka Tribe lists the RIDE from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday-Friday excluding holidays. Red serves Halibut Point Road, Blue serves Sawmill Creek Road, and Green serves Japonski Island and Indian River. The published adult one-way fare is approximately US$2; confirm the current fare and stop with the operator. This local network is separate from the cruise terminal shuttle. Add the connection to your assigned passenger exit and verify both services before relying on a bus outing.

Park approach and shuttle or tender return

Confirm a terminal berth or downtown tender arrival first. From Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal, reserve the outward shuttle queue time and check whether your date needs a return reservation. From downtown, confirm the local approach to the park visitor center and an open trail suited to your group. Return via the actual shuttle pickup or ship tender queue, including waits and ship-entry time.

Raptor Way connection and ship return

Confirm the center’s seasonal opening before arranging the connection to Raptor Way. From a terminal berth, include both downtown shuttle legs and any required return reservation, then the separate center transfer or walk. From a downtown tender, start at your actual landing. Confirm return pickup and include the shuttle or tender queue and final ship-entry checks.

Terminal food without a town transfer

Use this choice only if your ship berths at Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal. Confirm the permitted route from your gangway to the open food and shop areas and back, including any assistance needed. Include food waits and ship-entry time. This terminal-only outing does not require the downtown shuttle or a tender crossing.

Tour duration is only part of your time ashore. Allow for getting to the meeting point, early check-in, any transfers outside the tour and your return reserve. Confirm the ship’s clock, all-aboard time and any earlier last tender. These results have not been checked against your sailing.

How long is the ship in port, and when is all-aboard?

Port hours vary by ship and date in Sitka. Check your sailing itinerary for scheduled arrival and departure, then the onboard app or daily notice for all-aboard, ship time and any last-tender deadline. Subtract clearance, both transfers and a return buffer before choosing an outing. Scheduled arrival is not your guaranteed time ashore.

Can I explore independently?

Explore the totem poles and exhibits that interpret Tlingit and Russian history. Check NPS conditions and services before setting out; the park can change access for seasonal conditions or bear activity. This is our planning suggestion. Compare a ship excursion or reputable independent tour for more complicated outings, including the meeting point and return arrangements.

What should I take ashore?

Take your ship card or wearable, the identification specified in the ship’s port briefing, any tour ticket and a way to pay. Save your terminal name, return deadline and ship’s emergency contact offline. Ask whether your original passport is required for this visit; do not assume a phone photo replaces required identification.

How do I get off and back on the ship?

Wait for the ship’s announcement that passengers may go ashore. Follow its gangway, shuttle or tender instructions and any ticketing order. Keep your ship identification ready when leaving and returning. Allow for terminal access checks, queues and security screening before reboarding; tender passengers also need to meet the last return boat.

What should I know about safety around the port?

For Sitka’s wooded park paths and separate wildlife outings, Alaska Fish and Game advises making noise to avoid surprising bears, keeping your distance and securing food and rubbish. Check Southeast Alaska land and marine forecasts and any site or operator closures before departure. Regional wildlife and weather advice does not establish a reviewed passenger route, a sighting guarantee or suitable conditions for a boat trip.
