Puerto Rico Departure & port-visit guide

San Juan

Choose your side of the bay.

Your pier changes the plan. Old San Juan’s waterfront piers put the historic district close by; the Pan American piers are across the bay. This guide covers both a day ashore and the practicalities of starting a cruise here.

Explore on your own

Choose a plan for the stops, food, walking and extra costs. Before sailing, arrange luggage storage and follow your cruise line’s check-in window and final boarding deadline. On a port call, use the ship’s all-aboard time to set your return.

Start with the time you actually have

On embarkation day, work back from your cruise line’s check-in window instead. Count from when you can get off the ship, or ashore by tender, to the all-aboard time, using ship time. Times on these plans are our estimates, with time to spare; they cannot promise a plan fits your sailing.

Short plans need up to 4 hours in total, medium up to 6, long more than 6. A plan with a connection still to confirm has no total.

Put your day on the map

Select a terminal or place to see its location and open directions.

Open Old San Juan piers in Google Maps

Choose a place for its location, then open Google Maps for directions. Confirm the terminal on your cruise documents; a map result does not establish your ship’s berth or an accessible route.

Getting around

Airport to ship

The port’s transport page estimates 15–20 minutes and about US$24–30 for an airport taxi or rideshare, checked Sep 20, 2026. Confirm a quote to your exact pier, including luggage, and allow for traffic. Private transfers are another option.

San Juan Cruise Port: airport transfers

Staying before the cruise

Our suggestion: Old San Juan for an evening exploring the historic district; the convention-center area for a Pan American departure. Confirm the hotel’s transfer arrangements and luggage storage, even when the ship looks close.

Discover Puerto Rico: cruise-port planning

Airport pickup depends on your arrival terminal

Checked October 6, 2026: SJU lists taxi pickup at the arrivals level of Terminal A and at Terminal B for passengers from B and C. Its designated Uber areas include Terminal A and columns 16-19 for B and C. Bus stops are on the departures level in A, D and E; the airport lists T5/D53 for Old San Juan and D53 for the convention center. Verify current service, luggage rules and pickup signs. These city destinations do not establish a transfer to your assigned Old San Juan or Pan American cruise entrance.

Luis Muñoz Marín Airport: taxi, bus and rideshare pickup locations

El Morro and the route back

For the mapped history choice, start with El Morro; San Cristóbal remains an alternative rather than a second required fort. From an Old San Juan pier, confirm the street approach, fort entrance and return walk. From Pan American, arrange both vehicle legs and a pickup location in the old city. Check current fort access with NPS: its accessibility page describes steep historic surfaces and inaccessible lower levels. If you are embarking, arrange luggage storage and collection, the transfer to your actual terminal and check-in within the cruise line’s boarding window. A coffee break at Café Don Ruiz is optional, subject to service.

Old-city food and your own pier

Choose the streets around Café Berlín at Plaza Colón and check kitchen service before relying on lunch. Old San Juan waterfront piers and Pan American across the bay have different connections: include your actual pier approach or both vehicle legs, pickup waiting and the walk to the restaurant. For embarkation, add luggage collection and terminal check-in separately; walking near the waterfront does not put you at a Pan American boarding entrance. Save your return pickup or walking route before stopping for food.

Condado beach entrance and return ride

Treat Condado as a separate outing from the forts. Choose the actual beach entrance and arrange outward and return transport to the pier named on your cruise documents; an Old San Juan pickup is not a Pan American pickup. Include vehicle waiting, both road journeys, beach access and changing before returning. Check local sea conditions and facilities, then agree a reachable return pickup. Before embarking, include stored-luggage collection and check-in after the beach transfer.

Before you go ashore

How long is the ship in port, and when is all-aboard?

Port hours vary by ship and date in San Juan. Check your sailing itinerary for scheduled arrival and departure, then the onboard app or daily notice for all-aboard, ship time and any last-tender deadline. Subtract clearance, both transfers and a return buffer before choosing an outing. Scheduled arrival is not your guaranteed time ashore.

Can I explore independently?

Start with one fort if it is open, then take a coffee or food break and explore the old city on the way back. From Pan American, keep the return vehicle transfer in your plan. This is our planning suggestion. Compare a ship excursion or reputable independent tour for more complicated outings, including the meeting point and return arrangements.

What should I take ashore?

Take your ship card or wearable, the identification specified in the ship’s port briefing, any tour ticket and a way to pay. Save your terminal name, return deadline and ship’s emergency contact offline. Ask whether your original passport is required for this visit; do not assume a phone photo replaces required identification. U.S. dollars; Atlantic Standard Time. Puerto Rico does not change clocks for daylight saving. Check the ship’s time before planning your return.

How do I get off and back on the ship?

Wait for the ship’s announcement that passengers may go ashore. Follow its gangway, shuttle or tender instructions and any ticketing order. Keep your ship identification ready when leaving and returning. Allow for terminal access checks, queues and security screening before reboarding; tender passengers also need to meet the last return boat.

What should I know about safety around the port?

Check the National Weather Service beach and rip-current forecast before entering the sea. Dangerous currents can occur even in good weather, including near inlets, jetties, reefs and piers. Follow local warnings and lifeguard instructions. This coastal-conditions advice is separate from an Old San Juan walking visit and does not complete a town security or route assessment.

Starting or ending your cruise here

For embarkation, use your cruise line’s terminal and check-in instructions. After the cruise, allow for disembarkation, baggage collection and the airport transfer before airline check-in.

Where can I park, and what does it cost?

The port operator says there is no parking within San Juan Cruise Port. It lists Covadonga across from the piers and private alternatives. Confirm overnight permission, the full-cruise price and transport to your assigned pier; a current long-stay rate is not verified here.

How do I get from the airport to the terminal?

Use the SJU airport code. Luis Muñoz Marín International is distinct from the smaller Isla Grande airport beside Pan American. Confirm the airport and pier with your driver. The port’s transport page estimates 15–20 minutes and about US$24–30 for an airport taxi or rideshare, checked Sep 20, 2026. Steep ramps, steps and uneven surfaces limit parts of the forts. Ask NPS about your route and current elevator access.

The port lists Condado among nearby attractions. Our suggestion: make it a separate outing with a return ride, rather than adding it to a full fort visit. Check sea conditions, facilities and rental charges locally.

Choose what fits your call

Our suggestion: favor the old city for a short stop. A beach visit works better when you have enough time for both transfers, changing and the walk back through the terminal.

Our suggested day ashore

Start with one fort if it is open, then take a coffee or food break and explore the old city on the way back. From Pan American, keep the return vehicle transfer in your plan.

If your cruise starts here

Confirm luggage storage with your hotel before sightseeing. The port says there is no onsite parking, so drivers should arrange a suitable offsite option. Arrive for the boarding window on your cruise documents.
