British Virgin Islands Port of call

Road Town

Keep the island day simple.

Tortola’s cruise stop gives you a choice of Pier Park food and shops, a beach outing to Cane Garden Bay, or a separate island trip. The Baths are on Virgin Gorda, so build that day around boat connections, not a taxi alone.

Start with the time you actually have

Count from when you can get off the ship, or ashore by tender, to the all-aboard time, using ship time. Times on these plans are our estimates, with time to spare; they cannot promise a plan fits your sailing.

Short plans need up to 4 hours in total, medium up to 6, long more than 6. A plan with a connection still to confirm has no total.

Put your day on the map

Select a terminal or place to see its location and open directions.

Open Tortola Pier Park in Google Maps

Choose a place for its location, then open Google Maps for directions. Confirm the terminal on your cruise documents; a map result does not establish your ship’s berth or an accessible route.

Getting around

A beach ride

Our advice: agree on the total fare, currency and precise return pickup before heading to Cane Garden Bay. Leave room for traffic and the walk back through the port.

An island trip takes more planning

Our advice: for Virgin Gorda, check boat departures, onward transport, the return connection and your ship’s deadline together. An available outward ferry is only half the plan.

Pier Park and your own return point

Save your actual dock or tender landing and the ship’s return instructions before browsing Pier Park. For a docked arrival, include the pier walk, movement around the shopping area and port re-entry; for a tender arrival, confirm the landing-to-Pier Park connection, return queue and last tender. Check meal service before relying on Delhi Corner or D’s Kitchen. This local option does not require the Cane Garden Bay beach ride or a Virgin Gorda ferry.

Garden entrance and the route back

Confirm the J.R. O’Neal Botanic Gardens entrance, current opening and admission before leaving your actual landing. Choose walking or a vehicle connection that suits your group and account for both directions, any pickup waiting and access inside the gardens. A tourism listing does not measure the route from your berth. If stopping for food at Pier Park afterwards, include that approach and meal wait; anchored passengers also need their actual tender landing and return queue.

Cane Garden Bay pickup and return

Arrange the outward and return ride from your actual Road Town exit to a named Cane Garden Bay beach access. Agree the party fare, currency, pickup place and time before leaving. Include getting to the vehicle, both road journeys, waiting and the approach onto the sand; check water conditions and facilities locally. Return to your own dock or tender landing, including any tender queue. This is a Tortola road outing, not a ferry connection to the Baths on Virgin Gorda.

Paying for a beach day

Our advice: compare the return ride, chairs, shade and lunch as one total. A taxi fare should not be assumed to include beach rentals.

Our advice: check whether a quoted trip includes both boat journeys, land transfers and entry fees. Keep any independent connection costs in the budget.

Before you go ashore

How long is the ship in port, and when is all-aboard?

Port hours vary by ship and date in Road Town. Check your sailing itinerary for scheduled arrival and departure, then the onboard app or daily notice for all-aboard, ship time and any last-tender deadline. Subtract clearance, both transfers and a return buffer before choosing an outing. Scheduled arrival is not your guaranteed time ashore.

Can I explore independently?

Pier Park is the simple independent option. For The Baths, compare an organized outing with the complete ferry-and-road journey; do not judge the fit by time at the attraction alone.

What should I take ashore?

Take your ship card or wearable, the identification specified in the ship’s port briefing, any tour ticket and a way to pay. Save your terminal name, return deadline and ship’s emergency contact offline. Ask whether your original passport is required for this visit; do not assume a phone photo replaces required identification. U.S. dollars. Our advice: carry small cash and confirm whether a transport quote is per person or for the whole vehicle.

How do I get off and back on the ship?

Wait for the ship’s announcement that passengers may go ashore. Follow its gangway, shuttle or tender instructions and any ticketing order. Keep your ship identification ready when leaving and returning. Allow for terminal access checks, queues and security screening before reboarding; tender passengers also need to meet the last return boat.

What should I know about safety around the port?

Keep valuables secure and carry a working phone. Government guidance records serious armed incidents, including in public areas; avoid isolated beaches after dark and do not leave bags unattended on the beach. An outing on Tortola or another island needs a confirmed return plan to the ship, with weather and boat schedules checked separately.
