Dominican Republic Port of call

Puerto Plata

Know your port, then choose.

Check your terminal first. Taino Bay is in Puerto Plata; Amber Cove is at Maimón Bay. That changes your town transfer, lunch choices and pool access. Choose a port day, a city visit or a beach outing around your actual arrival point.

Start with the time you actually have

Count from when you can get off the ship, or ashore by tender, to the all-aboard time, using ship time. Times on these plans are our estimates, with time to spare; they cannot promise a plan fits your sailing.

Short plans need up to 4 hours in total, medium up to 6, long more than 6. A plan with a connection still to confirm has no total.

Put your day on the map

Select a terminal or place to see its location and open directions.

Open Taino Bay in Google Maps

Choose a place for its location, then open Google Maps for directions. Confirm the terminal on your cruise documents; a map result does not establish your ship’s berth or an accessible route.

Getting around

From Amber Cove to town

The port publishes independent taxi-provider information. Our advice: agree on the group fare, waiting time and return pickup before leaving for Puerto Plata.

Amber Cove: taxi information

Keep your terminal name handy

Our advice: save the exact return destination and a photo of the meeting point. “Puerto Plata cruise port” alone can leave your driver with the wrong destination.

Stay inside your own arrival complex

Confirm Taino Bay or Amber Cove first and use that arrival complex’s own facilities. Taino Bay’s operator restricts access to cruisers arriving there; an Amber Cove arrival does not establish permission to visit it. Include the pier-to-facilities walk, changing or food waiting and return through your own gate. Ask which activities cost extra. This local choice has no town or Playa Dorada road transfer, and Taino Bay’s pools are not a beach connection.

Central Park from the correct port

Choose Central Park as the town anchor and confirm your outward route from Taino Bay or Amber Cove. From Amber Cove, arrange both vehicle legs with the provider and agree the pickup, party fare and waiting terms; do not treat the two ports as the same starting point. From Taino Bay, confirm the actual exit-to-town approach and choose walking or transport for your group. Include local walking around the cathedral area, any ride or pickup wait, and the return through your own terminal.

Playa Dorada access and terminal return

Choose a named Playa Dorada access point and confirm day-visitor facilities before arranging both road journeys from your own Taino Bay or Amber Cove port. Agree a reachable return pickup, time, party fare and what any package includes. Taino Bay lists a Playa Dorada experience, but its availability does not establish terms for an independent visit or an Amber Cove arrival. Include vehicle waits, beach access, changing and terminal re-entry; resort surroundings do not establish hotel permissions.

Make room for lunch

Taino Bay: Cantina Latina or Blue Parrot

Cantina Latina serves Dominican and grilled dishes; Blue Parrot focuses on Caribbean seafood. Confirm kitchen hours locally, since the port listing does not publish them. Food and drinks cost extra.

Taino Bay: restaurants and beach outings

Amber Cove: Coco Caña

American favorites with Dominican touches. El Cibao Café is another option for locally sourced coffee. The port FAQ does not specify kitchen hours; check service before sitting down. Food and drinks cost extra.

Plan your spending

Taino Bay’s free facilities

Pools and lazy river access do not make the whole port all-inclusive. Our advice: ask the price before ordering food or choosing an added activity.

Amber Cove activities

The port lists pools, slides, cabanas and activities such as ziplining. Check the separate prices and availability of rentals or activities before choosing them.

Take a planned tour

Prefer an organized outing in Puerto Plata? Browse tours with Viator, then check the exact meeting point, departure, inclusions and cancellation terms before booking.

Tour duration is only part of your time ashore. Allow for getting to the meeting point, early check-in, any transfers outside the tour and your return reserve. Confirm the ship’s clock, all-aboard time and any earlier last tender. These results have not been checked against your sailing.

Before you go ashore

How long is the ship in port, and when is all-aboard?

Port hours vary by ship and date in Puerto Plata. Check your sailing itinerary for scheduled arrival and departure, then the onboard app or daily notice for all-aboard, ship time and any last-tender deadline. Subtract clearance, both transfers and a return buffer before choosing an outing. Scheduled arrival is not your guaranteed time ashore.

Can I explore independently?

Our suggestion: use your arrival port’s facilities and eat nearby for a day with fewer transfers. Confirm opening and service times after arrival. This is our planning suggestion. Compare a ship excursion or reputable independent tour for more complicated outings, including the meeting point and return arrangements.

What should I take ashore?

Take your ship card or wearable, the identification specified in the ship’s port briefing, any tour ticket and a way to pay. Save your terminal name, return deadline and ship’s emergency contact offline. Ask whether your original passport is required for this visit; do not assume a phone photo replaces required identification. ATM dispenses Dominican pesos. Ask which currency a menu or taxi quote uses before paying.

How do I get off and back on the ship?

Wait for the ship’s announcement that passengers may go ashore. Follow its gangway, shuttle or tender instructions and any ticketing order. Keep your ship identification ready when leaving and returning. Allow for terminal access checks, queues and security screening before reboarding; tender passengers also need to meet the last return boat.

What should I know about safety around the port?

Keep valuables discreet and bags away from the roadside because motorcycle bag-snatching occurs. Keep payment cards in view and avoid remote areas, especially after dark. National guidance warns of opportunistic and violent crime. Confirm the actual port and arranged return transport; Amber Cove access and a Puerto Plata town outing are different journeys.
