Panama Departure & port-visit guide

Panama City

Canal views, the old quarter, a biodiversity museum.

Choose Miraflores canal views, a Casco Antiguo visit or the Biomuseo on Amador. The Panama Cruise Terminal is on Isla Perico on the Amador Causeway, on the Pacific side; it is not Colón’s Caribbean-side Home Port. Confirm your line’s exact berth, passenger access and both city connections. Keep canal transits separate from visitor-center stops, and protect the check-in window when starting your cruise.

Option 1

Explore on your own

Choose a plan for the stops, food, walking and extra costs. Before sailing, arrange luggage storage and follow your cruise line’s check-in window and final boarding deadline. On a port call, use the ship’s all-aboard time to set your return.

Start with the time you actually have

On embarkation day, work back from your cruise line’s check-in window instead. Count from when you can get off the ship, or ashore by tender, to the all-aboard time, using ship time. Times on these plans are our estimates, with time to spare; they cannot promise a plan fits your sailing.

Short plans need up to 4 hours in total, medium up to 6, long more than 6. A plan with a connection still to confirm has no total.

Put your day on the map

Select a terminal or place to see its location and open directions.

Open Miraflores Visitor Center in Google Maps

Choose a place for its location, then open Google Maps for directions. Confirm the terminal on your cruise documents; a map result does not establish your ship’s berth or an accessible route.

Local know-how

Worth knowing before you walk off

Checked Oct 3, 2026. Confirm fares and hours locally before paying.

Miraflores works

Allow separately for entry waiting

The Canal Authority says modernization works continue through late 2026 and may increase entry waits. Recheck the notice before your visit rather than assuming older exhibition descriptions still apply.

Getting around

Confirm outward and return transport

Our suggestion: choose one main visit and arrange both rides to the actual passenger entrance. Being on the same causeway does not establish a walkable or step-free route to the Biomuseo.

Make room for lunch

Choose an open venue in your visit area

The tourism board identifies Casco Antiguo as a dining district. Our suggestion: confirm the menu, ingredients, full bill and waiting time directly, then keep the return pickup visible. No named restaurant or current meal price is researched here.

Option 2

Take a planned tour

Prefer an organized outing in Panama City? Browse tours with Viator, then check the exact meeting point, departure, inclusions and cancellation terms before booking.

Tour duration is only part of your time ashore. Allow for getting to the meeting point, early check-in, any transfers outside the tour and your return reserve. Confirm the ship’s clock, all-aboard time and any earlier last tender. These results have not been checked against your sailing.

Find tours for your port visit

Search up to one year ahead. Schedules are indicative; confirm available departure times and your group’s final price on Viator.

First steps ashore

Keep Amador distinct from Colón and other city piers

The Panama Cruise Terminal is at Amador on Isla Perico. Confirm your sailing’s exact berth, passenger entrance and any internal transfer; use different landing instructions if your line supplies them.

Your ship confirms the arrival pier and any tender arrangements for your sailing.

Before you go ashore

How long is the ship in port, and when is all-aboard?

Port hours vary by ship and date in Panama City. Check your sailing itinerary for scheduled arrival and departure, then the onboard app or daily notice for all-aboard, ship time and any last-tender deadline. Subtract clearance, both transfers and a return buffer before choosing an outing. Scheduled arrival is not your guaranteed time ashore.

What should I take ashore?

Take your ship card or wearable, the identification specified in the ship’s port briefing, any tour ticket and a way to pay. Save your terminal name, return deadline and ship’s emergency contact offline. Ask whether your original passport is required for this visit; do not assume a phone photo replaces required identification. US dollars and Panamanian balboas. The banking regulator describes the balboa at parity with the US dollar and dollar use in transactions. Confirm actual payment methods, entry charges and the complete ride or meal bill directly.

How do I get off and back on the ship?

Wait for the ship’s announcement that passengers may go ashore. Follow its gangway, shuttle or tender instructions and any ticketing order. Keep your ship identification ready when leaving and returning. Allow for terminal access checks, queues and security screening before reboarding; tender passengers also need to meet the last return boat.

What should I know about safety around the port?

UK FCDO guidance advises precautions against muggings in Casco Viejo, notes heavy Panama City traffic and recommends ride-hailing or hotel-arranged transport. Check current local conditions; these plans do not assess a terminal-to-sight walking route as safe.

Starting or ending your cruise here

For embarkation, use your cruise line’s terminal and check-in instructions. After the cruise, allow for disembarkation, baggage collection and the airport transfer before airline check-in.

Where can I park, and what does it cost?

Long-stay arrangements need checking. Current cruise-date parking permission, reservations, prices and the passenger connection at Amador remain unverified here. Confirm these directly before leaving a vehicle for your voyage.

How do I get from the airport to the terminal?

Confirm Tocumen and your actual flight. Tocumen Airport publishes ground transport options. Use your actual flight, airport terminal and the line’s Amador joining instructions; no current airport-to-cruise-terminal journey time or fare is verified here. Our suggestion: choose one main visit and arrange both rides to the actual passenger entrance. Being on the same causeway does not establish a walkable or step-free route to the Biomuseo.

What time should I arrive for embarkation?

Use the arrival window and final check-in or boarding deadline issued by your cruise line for Panama City. They are different from the ship’s departure time. Allow for terminal traffic, baggage drop and security; arriving early does not necessarily mean you can board early.

How does luggage drop-off work?

Confirm the designated baggage drop-off at your assigned terminal and the time your sailing accepts bags. Attach your cruise luggage tags before handover. Keep travel documents, medication and valuables in your carry-on. Baggage drop-off is not a promise of early boarding or all-day luggage storage.
