Ocho Rios

Falls, gardens or a town day.

Choose a town-and-food day or an outing to Dunn’s River Falls. The falls, beach and gardens offer different ways to spend the visit, so climbing need not be the whole plan.

Start with the time you actually have

Count from when you can get off the ship, or ashore by tender, to the all-aboard time, using ship time. Times on these plans are our estimates, with time to spare; they cannot promise a plan fits your sailing.

Short plans need up to 4 hours in total, medium up to 6, long more than 6. A plan with a connection still to confirm has no total.

Put your day on the map

Select a terminal or place to see its location and open directions.

Open Ocho Rios cruise terminal in Google Maps

Choose a place for its location, then open Google Maps for directions. Confirm the terminal on your cruise documents; a map result does not establish your ship’s berth or an accessible route.

Getting around

Agree the whole journey

Our advice: confirm the fare currency, waiting time, pickup point and return time before leaving. Leave room for queues and changing clothes as well as the drive.

Route taxis and charter taxis serve different trips

Visit Jamaica distinguishes private charter taxis from route taxis, which follow fixed routes and may collect other passengers. It describes licensed vehicles as having red PPV or white P plates and advises checking the driver’s Transport Authority ID. Before taking a ride to Dunn’s River Falls or another attraction, confirm whether it is a shared route service or a private charter, the total fare, and the exact return pickup. A route ride does not include a waiting driver or a booked round trip.

Visit Jamaica: public transportation

Falls entrance, climb and return pickup

Arrange both road journeys from your actual Ocho Rios berth to Dunn’s River’s entrance. Confirm the visitor ticket category, current opening, climb requirements and the return meeting place before leaving. Include port exit, vehicle waiting, both drives, admission and any gear or group preparation; the climb is activity at the site. Agree how to return early if conditions or your group’s needs change, and leave changing time before meeting the driver. A shared route taxi does not establish a waiting vehicle or booked return.

Non-climbing park visit and the ride back

Choose the beach, gardens or viewing areas at Dunn’s River that suit your group and confirm their actual access with park staff. This is the same off-port destination as the falls plan, with a different activity choice: arrange both drives, entrance tickets and a precise return pickup. Include vehicle waits, the approach to your selected areas and changing before leaving. Do not use the climb’s activity time as the budget for this non-climbing visit, or assume every park area is step-free.

Island Village from your assigned berth

Confirm the approach from your actual berth to Island Village and the return gate before choosing to walk. Include both approaches, any required transport and meal waiting; choose a manageable town route. Margaritaville is an optional food or facilities stop, with current service and access terms checked separately. A meal does not establish permission to use every beach or pool facility. This local outing does not use the Dunn’s River round trip, and a tourism estimate near the port is not a measured route from every berth.

Make room for lunch

Margaritaville: Caribbean and American

At Island Village on Turtle Beach Road, choices include burgers, jerk BBQ pork tacos and fish or shrimp tacos. Meals cost extra. The source does not establish dependable kitchen hours; confirm lunch service for your call.

Ocho Rios Jerk Centre: Jamaican food

Jamaica tourism lists jerk chicken, pork, fish, conch and sausage at this town-centre stop. Food is a separate purchase. Published hours were not established, so check service before making a special trip.

Plan your spending

Use the visitor ticket category

Dunn’s River sells separate resident and non-resident tickets; resident admission requires identification. Check current non-resident pricing and opening hours when planning. A transport fare alone does not establish park admission.

Ask what the beach bill covers

Our advice: request a total for access, chairs, umbrellas, food and drinks before settling in. For a packaged outing, check whether transport and admission are both included.

Option 2

Take a planned tour

Prefer an organized outing in Ocho Rios? Browse tours with Viator, then check the exact meeting point, departure, inclusions and cancellation terms before booking.

Tour duration is only part of your time ashore. Allow for getting to the meeting point, early check-in, any transfers outside the tour and your return reserve. Confirm the ship’s clock, all-aboard time and any earlier last tender. These results have not been checked against your sailing.

Before you go ashore

How long is the ship in port, and when is all-aboard?

Port hours vary by ship and date in Ocho Rios. Check your sailing itinerary for scheduled arrival and departure, then the onboard app or daily notice for all-aboard, ship time and any last-tender deadline. Subtract clearance, both transfers and a return buffer before choosing an outing. Scheduled arrival is not your guaranteed time ashore.

Can I explore independently?

For a farther outing such as Dunn’s River Falls, our suggestion is a reputable organized trip or prearranged return transport. Check current local advice before deciding to walk beyond the port area.

What should I take ashore?

Take your ship card or wearable, the identification specified in the ship’s port briefing, any tour ticket and a way to pay. Save your terminal name, return deadline and ship’s emergency contact offline. Ask whether your original passport is required for this visit; do not assume a phone photo replaces required identification. Jamaican dollar. Ask which currency a quoted taxi fare, menu or attraction price uses.

How do I get off and back on the ship?

Wait for the ship’s announcement that passengers may go ashore. Follow its gangway, shuttle or tender instructions and any ticketing order. Keep your ship identification ready when leaving and returning. Allow for terminal access checks, queues and security screening before reboarding; tender passengers also need to meet the last return boat.

Stay around town

Our suggestion: browse Island Village, choose a lunch stop and add beach facilities only after confirming their terms. Keep the ship’s actual all-aboard time as the day’s limit.
