United States Departure & port-visit guide

Miami

Make time before sailing.

Choose your exact terminal before arranging the ride. Miami works well with an extra night for Cuban food or the beach; keep boarding morning focused on getting to the ship.

Option 1

Explore on your own

Choose a plan for the stops, food, walking and extra costs. Before sailing, arrange luggage storage and follow your cruise line’s check-in window and final boarding deadline. On a port call, use the ship’s all-aboard time to set your return.

Start with the time you actually have

On embarkation day, work back from your cruise line’s check-in window instead. Count from when you can get off the ship, or ashore by tender, to the all-aboard time, using ship time. Times on these plans are our estimates, with time to spare; they cannot promise a plan fits your sailing.

Short plans need up to 4 hours in total, medium up to 6, long more than 6. A plan with a connection still to confirm has no total.

Put your day on the map

Select a terminal or place to see its location and open directions.

Open Terminal AA in Google Maps

Choose a place for its location, then open Google Maps for directions. Confirm the terminal on your cruise documents; a map result does not establish your ship’s berth or an accessible route.

Getting around

Public transport takes several steps

The port describes Metrorail to Government Center, Metromover to Freedom Tower, then the Coral Way trolley. Trolley stops serve parts of the port, not every terminal door. Check the current route and the final walk with your luggage.

PortMiami: terminal addresses and transport

Compare the full transfer

For either MIA or Fort Lauderdale flights, ask for a door-to-terminal quote including tolls, luggage and child seats if needed. Allow time for baggage collection and traffic; a flight arrival time is not a terminal arrival time.

Separate contactless methods for each rider

Miami-Dade Transit currently requires a different contactless payment method for each passenger, such as a bank card, phone or wearable. Do not repeatedly tap the same card or device to pay for a group. Confirm the fare for the transit service you choose and the onward trolley or vehicle connection to your assigned PortMiami terminal. Checked Oct 6, 2026.

Food and visits

Meals, admission and rentals are separate purchases unless your chosen package explicitly includes them. Check the dated details in each plan.

Option 2

Take a planned tour

Prefer an organized outing in Miami? Browse tours with Viator, then check the exact meeting point, departure, inclusions and cancellation terms before booking.

Tour duration is only part of your time ashore. Allow for getting to the meeting point, early check-in, any transfers outside the tour and your return reserve. Confirm the ship’s clock, all-aboard time and any earlier last tender. These results have not been checked against your sailing.

Find tours for your port visit

Search up to one year ahead. Schedules are indicative; confirm available departure times and your group’s final price on Viator.

Before you go ashore

How long is the ship in port, and when is all-aboard?

Port hours vary by ship and date in Miami. Check your sailing itinerary for scheduled arrival and departure, then the onboard app or daily notice for all-aboard, ship time and any last-tender deadline. Subtract clearance, both transfers and a return buffer before choosing an outing. Scheduled arrival is not your guaranteed time ashore.

Can I explore independently?

Our suggestion: choose beach time at South Pointe or a Cuban meal at Versailles, then return to your hotel. Leave terminal check-in, baggage drop and parking for your assigned boarding window. This is our planning suggestion. Compare a ship excursion or reputable independent tour for more complicated outings, including the meeting point and return arrangements.

What should I take ashore?

Take your ship card or wearable, the identification specified in the ship’s port briefing, any tour ticket and a way to pay. Save your terminal name, return deadline and ship’s emergency contact offline. Ask whether your original passport is required for this visit; do not assume a phone photo replaces required identification.

How do I get off and back on the ship?

Wait for the ship’s announcement that passengers may go ashore. Follow its gangway, shuttle or tender instructions and any ticketing order. Keep your ship identification ready when leaving and returning. Allow for terminal access checks, queues and security screening before reboarding; tender passengers also need to meet the last return boat.

What should I know about safety around the port?

For a Miami Beach outing, including a separate visit near South Pointe Park, the city advises swimming in guarded areas and checking beach conditions. Rip currents can affect strong swimmers; a waterfront walk is not approval to enter the sea. Verify local instructions and transport back to your assigned PortMiami terminal. These coastal precautions are not a citywide or terminal-route security assessment.
