Haines

A town walk or a lake beyond it.

Haines offers a town day around Fort Seward and its museums, or a deliberate trip out to Chilkoot Lake. Choose the lake as your main outing if wildlife and scenery are the priority, with transport arranged both ways and no promise of a bear sighting.

Start with the time you actually have

Count from when you can get off the ship, or ashore by tender, to the all-aboard time, using ship time. Times on these plans are our estimates, with time to spare; they cannot promise a plan fits your sailing.

Short plans need up to 4 hours in total, medium up to 6, long more than 6. A plan with a connection still to confirm has no total.

Put your day on the map

Select a terminal or place to see its location and open directions.

Open Port Chilkoot Dock in Google Maps

Choose a place for its location, then open Google Maps for directions. Confirm the terminal on your cruise documents; a map result does not establish your ship’s berth or an accessible route.

Getting around

Book the lake connection

Our suggestion: reserve a guided outing with return transport if Chilkoot Lake is your priority. Confirm duration, pickup, mobility requirements and the return before booking. A town shuttle is not a confirmed ride to the lake.

Find the ship-day shuttle before exploring

Visit Haines lists a shuttle between town and the cruise dock when a cruise ship is in port, and places excursion pickups at the shore-side end of the pier. Checked October 6, 2026. Ask at the dock information kiosk for your day’s shuttle boarding point, fare, assistance and last return before leaving. This town connection is separate from a booked Chilkoot Lake outing or travel from Skagway, and no complete outing duration is verified here.

Choose the open museum before setting out

Confirm opening before leaving Port Chilkoot Dock. Use Sheldon Museum as the mapped first choice; Hammer Museum is an optional separate visit only after confirming its seasonal opening. Choose a walking route or town shuttle both ways, including any second-museum approach, shuttle wait and return to the ship.

Make room for lunch

Mountain Market

At 151 Third Avenue, the cafe offers coffee, sandwiches, wraps, soups and salads. Confirm the kitchen hours for your call: the site's footer lists cafe service until 3 pm, while its pizza text mentions later pickup. Do not build your return plan around an unconfirmed late lunch.

Option 2

Take a planned tour

Prefer an organized outing in Haines? Browse tours with Viator, then check the exact meeting point, departure, inclusions and cancellation terms before booking.

Tour duration is only part of your time ashore. Allow for getting to the meeting point, early check-in, any transfers outside the tour and your return reserve. Confirm the ship’s clock, all-aboard time and any earlier last tender. These results have not been checked against your sailing.

Before you go ashore

How long is the ship in port, and when is all-aboard?

Port hours vary by ship and date in Haines. Check your sailing itinerary for scheduled arrival and departure, then the onboard app or daily notice for all-aboard, ship time and any last-tender deadline. Subtract clearance, both transfers and a return buffer before choosing an outing. Scheduled arrival is not your guaranteed time ashore.

Can I explore independently?

At 11 Main Street, the museum overlooks Lynn Canal on the former mission grounds. It lists daily 10 am–5 pm opening, checked Sep 23, 2026. Ask ahead if you want a guided visit or need specific building assistance. This is our planning suggestion. Compare a ship excursion or reputable independent tour for more complicated outings, including the meeting point and return arrangements.

Take your ship card or wearable, the identification specified in the ship’s port briefing, any tour ticket and a way to pay. Save your terminal name, return deadline and ship’s emergency contact offline. Ask whether your original passport is required for this visit; do not assume a phone photo replaces required identification.

How do I get off and back on the ship?

Wait for the ship’s announcement that passengers may go ashore. Follow its gangway, shuttle or tender instructions and any ticketing order. Keep your ship identification ready when leaving and returning. Allow for terminal access checks, queues and security screening before reboarding; tender passengers also need to meet the last return boat.

What should I know about safety around the port?

For a Chilkoot Lake outing beyond Haines town, Alaska Fish and Game advises making noise to avoid surprising bears, keeping your distance and securing food and rubbish. Check Southeast Alaska land and marine forecasts and any site or operator closures before departure. Regional wildlife and weather advice does not establish a reviewed passenger route, a sighting guarantee or suitable conditions for a boat trip.
