Bergen

Harbor history and a hillside view.

Choose Bryggen and the market, a Fløibanen viewpoint visit or the archaeology at Bryggens Museum. Bergen’s cruise quays sit in different parts of the harbor, so confirm your berth and passenger exit before planning the city connection. Keep a funicular outing focused on the viewpoint, with time for the ride and queues in both directions.

Start with the time you actually have

Count from when you can get off the ship, or ashore by tender, to the all-aboard time, using ship time. Times on these plans are our estimates, with time to spare; they cannot promise a plan fits your sailing.

Short plans need up to 4 hours in total, medium up to 6, long more than 6. A plan with a connection still to confirm has no total.

Put your day on the map

Select a terminal or place to see its location and open directions.

Open Bryggen in Google Maps

Choose a place for its location, then open Google Maps for directions. Confirm the terminal on your cruise documents; a map result does not establish your ship’s berth or an accessible route.

Market seasons

Indoor and outdoor are different visits

Visit Bergen lists year-round indoor Mathallen and a seasonal outdoor market. Check the individual venue before making a meal the anchor of your outing.

Getting around

Keep the funicular return explicit

Fløibanen sells tickets online and in its app to bypass the ticket-office queue. Allow separately for boarding and the downhill return; no queue-time estimate is established here.

Airport light rail and separate express bus

Checked October 5, 2026: Skyss identifies Line 1 between Bergen airport and the city centre and lists the adult ticket at NOK 51. The airport express bus is a separate service with its own ticket information. Confirm the current rail service and the remaining connection to your assigned cruise quay; this is not a full airport-to-gangway fare or time allowance.

Skyss: Bergen airport public transport

Check the ticket start time in the Skyss app

The current Skyss app lets you buy a ticket for immediate use or select a later start time; it becomes valid automatically at that time. Check the date, zones and displayed validity before travelling. Skyss requires enough phone battery and internet access throughout the journey to show the ticket, so arrange another purchase method if you cannot meet those requirements. A journey-planner result does not establish ticket coverage for every express coach or boat, or a connection from your assigned cruise berth.

Option 2

Take a planned tour

Prefer an organized outing in Bergen? Browse tours with Viator, then check the exact meeting point, departure, inclusions and cancellation terms before booking.

Tour duration is only part of your time ashore. Allow for getting to the meeting point, early check-in, any transfers outside the tour and your return reserve. Confirm the ship’s clock, all-aboard time and any earlier last tender. These results have not been checked against your sailing.

Before you go ashore

How long is the ship in port, and when is all-aboard?

Port hours vary by ship and date in Bergen. Check your sailing itinerary for scheduled arrival and departure, then the onboard app or daily notice for all-aboard, ship time and any last-tender deadline. Subtract clearance, both transfers and a return buffer before choosing an outing. Scheduled arrival is not your guaranteed time ashore.

What should I take ashore?

Take your ship card or wearable, the identification specified in the ship’s port briefing, any tour ticket and a way to pay. Save your terminal name, return deadline and ship’s emergency contact offline. Ask whether your original passport is required for this visit; do not assume a phone photo replaces required identification. Norwegian kroner (NOK). Norges Bank lists legal-tender krone notes and coins. Confirm menu currency, card acceptance and any ticket or transport charges directly.

How do I get off and back on the ship?

Wait for the ship’s announcement that passengers may go ashore. Follow its gangway, shuttle or tender instructions and any ticketing order. Keep your ship identification ready when leaving and returning. Allow for terminal access checks, queues and security screening before reboarding; tender passengers also need to meet the last return boat.
