U.S. Virgin Islands Port of call

St. Croix

Start in Frederiksted.

Start with Frederiksted: this is where cruise ships arrive on St. Croix. Choose a town-and-beach day on the west coast, or make Christiansted your main outing with transport arranged. Trying to fit both towns and a long beach stop into a short call adds unnecessary travel.

Start with the time you actually have

Count from when you can get off the ship, or ashore by tender, to the all-aboard time, using ship time. Times on these plans are our estimates, with time to spare; they cannot promise a plan fits your sailing.

Short plans need up to 4 hours in total, medium up to 6, long more than 6. A plan with a connection still to confirm has no total.

Put your day on the map

Select a terminal or place to see its location and open directions.

Open Frederiksted cruise pier in Google Maps

Choose a place for its location, then open Google Maps for directions. Confirm the terminal on your cruise documents; a map result does not establish your ship’s berth or an accessible route.

Getting around

Keep a west-coast day simple

Use Frederiksted as your base. For Rainbow Beach, arrange a taxi if you prefer to avoid the road walk in heat. Confirm the return pickup point and whether the quoted fare covers the whole vehicle or each passenger.

Rhythms at Rainbow Beach: directions from the pier

Frederiksted fort walk and pier return

Use your actual Frederiksted landing and return instructions as the start of the town walk. Confirm Fort Frederik’s current opening, admission and entrance access before making an interior visit essential. Include the pier approach, the chosen town loop, museum waiting and return re-entry. If your ship uses anchorage, confirm its landing and tender return instead of assuming the docked pier route. This Frederiksted choice does not require the Rainbow Beach ride or a Christiansted round trip.

Rainbow Beach access and pickup

Choose a road ride or walking approach to Rainbow Beach that suits your group, with the return to Frederiksted arranged before leaving. If taking a taxi, agree the party fare, pickup place and time, and include vehicle waiting and both road legs. Confirm the beach approach, rentals and Rhythms’ service; add changing and pier re-entry on return. The restaurant’s directions contain different distance descriptions, so do not treat them as a verified walking route or complete budget. This west-coast outing does not include Christiansted.

Christiansted historic site and Frederiksted return

Make Christiansted the main road outing from your actual Frederiksted landing. Arrange both drives, a reachable site-area pickup and the return time before departure. Confirm the historic site’s current opening and entry arrangements; include walking between the drop-off and chosen buildings, admission waiting and pier re-entry. Keep any town wandering or lunch within the return arrangement rather than adding a Rainbow Beach visit. Confirm both vehicle and site access for your group; a historic-site listing is not a transport booking.

Check the bill for group charges

The restaurant says a 20% gratuity may be added for parties of five or more and 10% on takeout orders of $50 or more. These policies were checked Sep 21, 2026; review the bill before adding a further tip.

Plan your spending

Separate the parts of a beach day

Plan for return transport, lunch and any chair, umbrella or watersports rental. Ask the operator for an itemized total, including any deposit or time limit. Bring your own towel unless your chosen rental explicitly supplies one.

Check the details

Museum admission

Do not assume admission is included with a taxi tour. Ask which entrances are paid by the driver or operator and which you pay on arrival.

Can I walk from the ship?

Before you go ashore

How long is the ship in port, and when is all-aboard?

Port hours vary by ship and date in St. Croix. Check your sailing itinerary for scheduled arrival and departure, then the onboard app or daily notice for all-aboard, ship time and any last-tender deadline. Subtract clearance, both transfers and a return buffer before choosing an outing. Scheduled arrival is not your guaranteed time ashore.

Can I explore independently?

Our suggested order is a Frederiksted walk first, Rainbow Beach for lunch and beach time after the restaurant opens, then a prearranged ride back. Shorten the beach stay if the call is brief. This is our planning suggestion. Compare a ship excursion or reputable independent tour for more complicated outings, including the meeting point and return arrangements.

What should I take ashore?

Take your ship card or wearable, the identification specified in the ship’s port briefing, any tour ticket and a way to pay. Save your terminal name, return deadline and ship’s emergency contact offline. Ask whether your original passport is required for this visit; do not assume a phone photo replaces required identification.

How do I get off and back on the ship?

Wait for the ship’s announcement that passengers may go ashore. Follow its gangway, shuttle or tender instructions and any ticketing order. Keep your ship identification ready when leaving and returning. Allow for terminal access checks, queues and security screening before reboarding; tender passengers also need to meet the last return boat.

What should I know about safety around the port?

Keep Frederiksted town and Rainbow Beach visits separate from a Buck Island boat outing. For Buck Island, the National Park Service highlights strong sun, changing weather and variable sea conditions; confirm the complete return with the operator before booking. That island guidance does not establish conditions at Rainbow Beach or a security review of Frederiksted’s passenger route. Follow local and ship instructions for your actual outing.

Town plus beach

Our suggested order is a Frederiksted walk first, Rainbow Beach for lunch and beach time after the restaurant opens, then a prearranged ride back. Shorten the beach stay if the call is brief.

History-focused alternative

Choose Christiansted as the main trip, then return to Frederiksted with time for a waterfront stroll before boarding. Use the ship's all-aboard time, not the restaurant's closing time, to set your return deadline.
