Iceland Departure & port-visit guide

Reykjavík

Viking-age beginnings, fishing history, a city pond.

Explore the city’s beginnings at the Settlement Exhibition, Iceland’s fishing history at the Maritime Museum or a quieter stretch beside Tjörnin and Hljómskálagarðurinn park. Match your connection to the actual berth: Sundahöfn’s outer-harbour facilities and the Old Harbour are different starting points. When joining a cruise, keep sightseeing separate from the line’s check-in window. Golden Circle tours, lagoons and whale-watching departures need their own complete return budget.

Choose a plan for the stops, food, walking and extra costs. Before sailing, arrange luggage storage and follow your cruise line’s check-in window and final boarding deadline. On a port call, use the ship’s all-aboard time to set your return.

Start with the time you actually have

On embarkation day, work back from your cruise line’s check-in window instead. Count from when you can get off the ship, or ashore by tender, to the all-aboard time, using ship time. Times on these plans are our estimates, with time to spare; they cannot promise a plan fits your sailing.

Short plans need up to 4 hours in total, medium up to 6, long more than 6. A plan with a connection still to confirm has no total.

Put your day on the map

Select a terminal or place to see its location and open directions.

Open The Settlement Exhibition in Google Maps

Choose a place for its location, then open Google Maps for directions. Confirm the terminal on your cruise documents; a map result does not establish your ship’s berth or an accessible route.

Local know-how

Worth knowing before you walk off

Checked Oct 3, 2026. Confirm fares and hours locally before paying.

Terminal identity

Vör is already in use

The port’s 2026 news records the opening of Vör. Confirm whether your own sailing uses it rather than relying on an older description of a planned terminal.

Faxaports: 2026 Vör terminal opening news

Getting around

Keep the outer harbour and city separate

Our suggestion: confirm the exact passenger entrance, outward connection and return pickup before leaving. A city-centre map does not verify a gangway-to-sight route.

Faxaports: current Reykjavík berth schedule

A terminal shuttle is not a city sightseeing transfer

The 2026 facilities plan distinguishes terminal transport from city transport. Check current operation, eligibility, fare and last return directly; a marked shuttle area does not promise a free ride to the city.

Faxaports: 2026 cruise facilities and passenger flows

Check airport and port endpoints

KEF lists coach services via BSÍ and taxi options. Confirm which service reaches your actual cruise facility and any remaining connection, rather than using an airport-to-city estimate as airport-to-ship timing.

Keflavík Airport: transport to Reykjavík and BSÍ

BSÍ is an airport-bus connection, not the cruise quay

Flybus publishes Keflavík–Reykjavík airport transfers and a timetable distinguishing hotel/bus-stop pickups from BSÍ bus-terminal departures. Check the product’s actual drop-off and pickup, then arrange the remaining connection to your assigned Old Harbour or outer-harbour passenger entrance. Flight-related timetable changes and estimated arrivals do not establish a complete airport-to-gangway allowance.

Flybus: Keflavík airport and BSÍ connections

City buses do not take cash onboard

Strætó stopped accepting onboard cash on capital-area buses from June 1, 2025, while retaining cash payment on rural buses. For a Reykjavík city ride, arrange a supported contactless method or a valid Klapp product before boarding. Klapp’s contactless option buys one adult fare; check another product for children or other fare categories. These rules do not cover a separately operated airport coach or establish transport from your cruise quay.

Make room for lunch

Keep the break local

Our suggestion: choose an open venue near the visit you selected and check ingredients, the complete bill and service time. No restaurant-specific recommendation, menu price or museum café service is verified here.

What costs extra?

Published information checked Oct 6, 2026. Confirm current prices before paying.

Entry and food

Confirm admission where charged, any reserved program, meals and purchases directly. No whole-day or current menu price is established here.

Option 2

Take a planned tour

Prefer an organized outing in Reykjavík? Browse tours with Viator, then check the exact meeting point, departure, inclusions and cancellation terms before booking.

Tour duration is only part of your time ashore. Allow for getting to the meeting point, early check-in, any transfers outside the tour and your return reserve. Confirm the ship’s clock, all-aboard time and any earlier last tender. These results have not been checked against your sailing.

Find tours for your port visit

Search up to one year ahead. Schedules are indicative; confirm available departure times and your group’s final price on Viator.

Before you go ashore

How long is the ship in port, and when is all-aboard?

Port hours vary by ship and date in Reykjavík. Check your sailing itinerary for scheduled arrival and departure, then the onboard app or daily notice for all-aboard, ship time and any last-tender deadline. Subtract clearance, both transfers and a return buffer before choosing an outing. Scheduled arrival is not your guaranteed time ashore.

What should I take ashore?

Take your ship card or wearable, the identification specified in the ship’s port briefing, any tour ticket and a way to pay. Save your terminal name, return deadline and ship’s emergency contact offline. Ask whether your original passport is required for this visit; do not assume a phone photo replaces required identification. Icelandic krónur (ISK). The Central Bank identifies the króna as Iceland’s currency. Check how your chosen transport, museum and food venue take payment. No exchange rate or whole-day budget is established here.

How do I get off and back on the ship?

Wait for the ship’s announcement that passengers may go ashore. Follow its gangway, shuttle or tender instructions and any ticketing order. Keep your ship identification ready when leaving and returning. Allow for terminal access checks, queues and security screening before reboarding; tender passengers also need to meet the last return boat.

Starting or ending your cruise here

For embarkation, use your cruise line’s terminal and check-in instructions. After the cruise, allow for disembarkation, baggage collection and the airport transfer before airline check-in.

Where can I park, and what does it cost?

Check full-voyage permission directly. Passenger drop-off and transport areas in the terminal plan do not establish public long-stay parking, availability or complete cruise-date prices. Confirm the exact facility and permitted duration with the provider.

How do I get from the airport to the terminal?

Confirm KEF or Reykjavík Airport (RKV). Keflavík and Reykjavík are separate airports. KEF’s published coach connection to BSÍ does not establish a direct ride to your cruise entrance. Confirm the onward connection, airport exit and complete journey independently. Our suggestion: confirm the exact passenger entrance, outward connection and return pickup before leaving. How does luggage drop-off work?
