Plan around your all-aboard time
What to do in Philipsburg on a long cruise stop
With a longer St. Maarten stop, you can consider Maho Beach for plane spotting, provided the road conditions and return pickup work. A town day remains a good alternative when you would rather spend that time walking, browsing and eating nearby. This example uses eight hours remaining after you can leave the ship.
Start with the time you actually have
Count from when you can get off the ship, or ashore by tender, to the all-aboard time, using ship time. Times on these plans are our estimates, with time to spare; they cannot promise a plan fits your sailing.
Short plans need up to 4 hours in total, medium up to 6, long more than 6. A plan with a connection still to confirm has no total.
Choose one main outing
Choose Maho because you want to see the airport beach, then make that the main outing. Its budget allows more time for the road connections and a larger return reserve. Choose town when traffic is uncertain or you prefer an easier day; a longer port call does not require a longer journey.

- Getting there and back
- Confirm locally
- Time to spare
- 1 hr 30 min
- Agree your outward trip, return pickup and total fare.
- Watch aircraft from outside the jet-blast area. Follow posted warnings and stay away from the airport fence.
- Return to the cruise port with an allowance for traffic.
Local tip
Check the day’s arrivals before leaving. Use Princess Juliana Airport’s daily flight schedule to plan the visit. Aircraft and times can change; keep your return pickup even if a flight is delayed.
- Time to allow
- Not timed yet: some connections still need confirming.
- Time at the stops
- 1 hr 30 min–2 hr 30 min. Suggested time at the stops, including local browsing and a food break where described. Transport to and from the outing is separate.
- Transport and waiting
- Not yet included in a total. Arrange the Maho taxi pickup through the cruise-port transport area and agree the beach drop-off, return meeting point, pickup time and full fare before departure. Ask about current road conditions and wheelchair requirements when booking. Return directly without extra island stops, leaving the separate 90-minute editorial reserve intact.
- Connection evidence
- The port identifies its transport hub, but the primary sources reviewed do not bound both Maho drives, traffic, pickup waits and the berth walk. Accessible Ventures requires at least 24 hours’ notice for its transport bookings; confirm a vehicle and quote for your route. Checked Oct 6, 2026. Transport notes checked Oct 6, 2026. The complete connection still needs confirming.
- Return reserve
- Keep 1 hr 30 min spare before all-aboard, or before the last tender if that is earlier. Our suggestion, not a cruise-line rule; allow more if your ship asks.
- If you get ashore late
- Leave before the agreed pickup time if needed. Do not wait for another aircraft at the expense of the return.
- Walking
- Confirm the drop-off point, walking route and beach access with your driver if mobility is a concern.
- Food & opening hours
- Specific food-outlet hours and menus for this outing are not confirmed here. Check before leaving; budget separately for food and drinks.
- Jet-blast warning
- Do not try to experience aircraft jet blast. It can cause serious injury or death. The map pin identifies the beach, not a safe viewing position.
- Destination & return planning
- Little Bay is another beach option beyond Fort Amsterdam. Maho is the airport beach across the island. Our suggestion: choose one destination and leave room for the return drive, rather than combining both with a long town visit.
- Taxi arrangements
- Road taxis use zones and passenger counts. Ask for the total for everyone and whether it is one way. The local taxi guide lists accessible vehicles and the SXM Taxi app; arrange any mobility requirements in advance.
- Accessible transport
- Accessible Ventures lists vans and buses with ramps or lifts, plus wheelchair, scooter and beach-wheelchair rentals. Its FAQ asks for at least 24 hours’ notice. Request a quote and confirm pickup, chair dimensions, securement and the return before booking; availability is not guaranteed. Checked Oct 1, 2026.
- Booking & access
- Accessible Ventures lists ramp/lift vehicles and requires at least 24 hours’ notice for transport bookings. Request a route-specific quote and confirm the vehicle, chair dimensions and return pickup. Water-taxi boarding and the beach approach need separate enquiries; a road-vehicle booking does not establish boat access. Checked Oct 6, 2026.

Local tip
Pause at the pier’s memorial plaque. Captain Hodge Pier remembers Arsene Hubert Hodge, who sailed between the Windward Islands. Look for the plaque as you pass along the boardwalk.

Choose the walk or a water taxi into Philipsburg. The port lists Captain Hodge Wharf, Walter Williams Jetty and Bobby’s Marina as town water-taxi stops. Before buying, confirm which stop serves your chosen town and lunch stops, ticket validity and the last boat back. Keep time for landing, port entry and the walk to your berth.
- Connection evidence
- Port St. Maarten lists the three town water-taxi stops and describes an approximately 15-minute town walk. It does not give a complete berth-to-town-and-return timetable, boat wait or accessible boarding specification. Checked Oct 6, 2026. Transport notes checked Oct 6, 2026. The complete connection still needs confirming.
- Return reserve
- Keep 1 hr spare before all-aboard, or before the last tender if that is earlier. Our suggestion, not a cruise-line rule; allow more if your ship asks.
- If you get ashore late
- Choose one shopping street and a quick meal.
- Walking
- Choose the length of your town walk around your group’s mobility. Confirm boarding arrangements if using the water taxi.
- Town stops
- The port’s current cruise page names Captain Hodge Wharf, Walter Williams Jetty and Bobby’s Marina as water-taxi stops. Confirm the stop name and location on your ticket before boarding, and choose the one nearest your plans. Check the return boarding point at the same time.
- Food & opening hours
- Sushi, poke bowls, seafood, steaks and Chinese-Indonesian dishes at 22 Juancho Yrausquin Boulevard. Published kitchen hours: Mon–Sat noon–10 pm; Sunday closed. Meals cost extra. Checked Oct 1, 2026; confirm same-day opening.
- Water-taxi planning
- The port names town stops but does not publish a complete journey time, boarding wait or last return on its cruise page. Confirm the service and boarding method at the dock. The town and beach plans’ travel figures cover walking; they do not establish a boat trip’s timing or wheelchair access.

This example has 8 hr available. It is a planning exercise, not your ship’s schedule. Use the upper activity allowance and keep the return reserve untouched.
- Airport beach: after the upper activity allowance and return reserve, 4 hr remains for all transport and waiting. This is the maximum room in the example, not an estimate of the journey. Confirm that every connection fits before choosing it.
- Town & lunch: after the upper activity allowance and return reserve, 4 hr 30 min remains for all transport and waiting. This is the maximum room in the example, not an estimate of the journey. Confirm that every connection fits before choosing it.
Use direct taxis with the return arranged before leaving. Ask about airport-corridor traffic for the actual time of your journey. The budget is not a cap on possible delays; if the driver expects the full connections to take longer, choose the nearby alternative. The town budget uses walking and does not include water-taxi queues.
If you have less time
Leave an island circuit, a separate French-side visit and extra beach stops out of the Maho plan. Do not wait for another plane beyond the agreed pickup time. Flight movements are not a schedule for returning to your ship, and a delayed arrival ashore is a reason to switch to town.
Check before you go
