Portugal Departure & port-visit guide

Lisbon

The Tagus waterfront, Alfama lanes, and the story of fado.

Lisbon offers a riverfront square, a small slice of Alfama, or a museum devoted to fado. Choose one focus rather than filling the day with tram queues and hill climbs. Confirm whether your ship uses the main cruise terminal at Jardim do Tabaco or the separate Santa Apolónia building before making either a shore plan or an embarkation plan.

Choose a plan for the stops, food, walking and extra costs. Before sailing, arrange luggage storage and follow your cruise line’s check-in window and final boarding deadline. On a port call, use the ship’s all-aboard time to set your return.

Start with the time you actually have

On embarkation day, work back from your cruise line’s check-in window instead. Count from when you can get off the ship, or ashore by tender, to the all-aboard time, using ship time. Times on these plans are our estimates, with time to spare; they cannot promise a plan fits your sailing.

Short plans need up to 4 hours in total, medium up to 6, long more than 6. A plan with a connection still to confirm has no total.

Put your day on the map

Select a terminal or place to see its location and open directions.

Open Praça do Comércio in Google Maps

Choose a place for its location, then open Google Maps for directions. Confirm the terminal on your cruise documents; a map result does not establish your ship’s berth or an accessible route.

Getting around

From the assigned terminal

Santa Apolónia and Terreiro do Paço stations on the metro’s Blue Line are nearby options. Check the route from the assigned cruise exit and the return connection, especially with luggage or limited mobility.

Lisbon Cruise Port: passenger FAQ

Plan the return first

Our suggestion: save the exact passenger entrance and arrange both connections before adding sightseeing. Travel, queues and boarding procedures are outside the activity allocations.

Airport arrival

Lisbon Airport publishes a cruise-terminal connection page. Confirm a taxi or prebooked transfer to the named cruise building, or assess all public-transport legs with your luggage. An airport arrival time is not a guaranteed cruise check-in time.

Lisbon Airport: cruise terminal connections

Airport road estimate

Checked October 5, 2026: the cruise operator describes the airport as approximately 8 km away and quotes a 15–20-minute ride depending on traffic. This is a road-leg estimate, excluding airport formalities, pickup, luggage and cruise check-in. Give your driver the assigned terminal, since the port uses both TCL and TPSA buildings.

Lisbon Cruise Port: passenger FAQ

Each Metro passenger needs a payment method

Lisbon Metro accepts supported contactless bank cards and mobile wallets for single Metro rides. Each passenger needs their own card or device, and the same one must be used at entry and exit. Keep a phone or watch charged for the exit gate. The published contactless single fare was €1.92 when checked October 6, 2026; confirm the current fare. This is a Metro product, so check separate ticket requirements for any bus, tram or ferry leg.

Lisbon Metro: contactless payment rules

An onboard ticket ends when you leave

CARRIS says an onboard bus or tram ticket is valid only on the vehicle where it is purchased and expires on exit. A prepaid CARRIS/Metro ticket and the different 24-hour products have separate transfer and network rules. Choose the product before connecting between services, and check current operation of any tram, lift or funicular independently of its listed ticket. Checked Oct 6, 2026.

Entry and food

Separate each purchase

Check the chosen attraction’s dated admission and any meals or purchases. Activity allocations are not a whole-day price.

Option 2

Take a planned tour

Prefer an organized outing in Lisbon? Browse tours with Viator, then check the exact meeting point, departure, inclusions and cancellation terms before booking.

Tour duration is only part of your time ashore. Allow for getting to the meeting point, early check-in, any transfers outside the tour and your return reserve. Confirm the ship’s clock, all-aboard time and any earlier last tender. These results have not been checked against your sailing.

Find tours for your port visit

Can I walk from the ship?

The operator distinguishes Terminal de Cruzeiros de Lisboa at Jardim do Tabaco from Terminal de Passageiros de Santa Apolónia. Confirm the assigned building and passenger gate with your ship.

Before you go ashore

How long is the ship in port, and when is all-aboard?

Port hours vary by ship and date in Lisbon. Check your sailing itinerary for scheduled arrival and departure, then the onboard app or daily notice for all-aboard, ship time and any last-tender deadline. Subtract clearance, both transfers and a return buffer before choosing an outing. Scheduled arrival is not your guaranteed time ashore.

What should I take ashore?

Take your ship card or wearable, the identification specified in the ship’s port briefing, any tour ticket and a way to pay. Save your terminal name, return deadline and ship’s emergency contact offline. Ask whether your original passport is required for this visit; do not assume a phone photo replaces required identification. Euros (EUR). Confirm the currency charged and the complete bill before paying. No exchange rate or whole-day budget is established.

How do I get off and back on the ship?

Wait for the ship’s announcement that passengers may go ashore. Follow its gangway, shuttle or tender instructions and any ticketing order. Keep your ship identification ready when leaving and returning. Allow for terminal access checks, queues and security screening before reboarding; tender passengers also need to meet the last return boat.
