Start with the time you actually have

Count from when you can get off the ship, or ashore by tender, to the all-aboard time, using ship time. Times on these plans are our estimates, with time to spare; they cannot promise a plan fits your sailing.

Short plans need up to 4 hours in total, medium up to 6, long more than 6. A plan with a connection still to confirm has no total.

Put your day on the map

Select a terminal or place to see its location and open directions.

Open Key West cruise port in Google Maps

Choose a place for its location, then open Google Maps for directions. Confirm the terminal on your cruise documents; a map result does not establish your ship’s berth or an accessible route.

Getting around

Plan from the actual pier

Our advice: check the route from your ship’s landing point before choosing to walk. Include any required transfer in your return plan.

Keep the route compact

Our suggestion: choose the fort and beach or an Old Town museum as the anchor. Add lunch nearby instead of crisscrossing town to fit every landmark into one call.

Fort entrance and return to your pier

Confirm your actual Key West pier and the ship’s shore-access instructions before setting out for Fort Zachary Taylor at Howard England Way. Check the park and fort’s separate opening windows and allow for the entrance-to-fort and beach approaches. Include both journeys from your permitted landing or transfer drop-off, admission and equipment waiting, and any required pier transfer on return. Keep cafe service optional and check water conditions. The park’s closing time is not your ship’s deadline.

Museum gate and your own pier connection

Plan both directions between your actual landing or transfer drop-off and Hemingway Home. The museum sells tickets at its main gate for walk-in visits; include admission waiting and the route inside, rather than treating a guided-tour duration as the full outing. Save any required return transfer’s pickup and operating instructions before visiting. Keep lunch optional if its queue would reduce the ship’s return allowance, and allow for pier re-entry after the museum.

Blue Heaven wait and return connection

Choose a manageable Old Town route to Blue Heaven at Thomas and Petronia streets from your actual landing or permitted transfer drop-off. Breakfast and lunch use first-come seating, so check the service window and wait before joining the queue. Include both approaches, seating and meal time, any required return transfer and pier re-entry. Save the ship’s pickup instructions before eating and shorten the stroll or choose another stop if waiting would squeeze your return.

Cayo Hueso Cafe: beach lunch

Inside Fort Zachary Taylor, the cafe lists daily service from 10 am to 6 pm. Choices include Cuban sandwiches, burgers, veggie burgers, wraps, pizza and frozen Key lime pie on a stick. Food costs extra.

Take a planned tour

Prefer an organized outing in Key West? Browse tours with Viator, then check the exact meeting point, departure, inclusions and cancellation terms before booking.

Tour duration is only part of your time ashore. Allow for getting to the meeting point, early check-in, any transfers outside the tour and your return reserve. Confirm the ship’s clock, all-aboard time and any earlier last tender. These results have not been checked against your sailing.

Can I walk from the ship?

Begin with your assigned pier and the ship’s current exit instructions. Plan a compact Old Town outing, but do not assume every berth has the same walking or shuttle access.

Before you go ashore

How long is the ship in port, and when is all-aboard?

Port hours vary by ship and date in Key West. Check your sailing itinerary for scheduled arrival and departure, then the onboard app or daily notice for all-aboard, ship time and any last-tender deadline. Subtract clearance, both transfers and a return buffer before choosing an outing. Scheduled arrival is not your guaranteed time ashore.

Can I explore independently?

Our suggestion: head to Fort Zachary Taylor, visit the fort during its shorter opening window, then swim and eat at the cafe. Leave enough time for the route back to your assigned pier. This is our planning suggestion. Compare a ship excursion or reputable independent tour for more complicated outings, including the meeting point and return arrangements.

What should I take ashore?

Take your ship card or wearable, the identification specified in the ship’s port briefing, any tour ticket and a way to pay. Save your terminal name, return deadline and ship’s emergency contact offline. Ask whether your original passport is required for this visit; do not assume a phone photo replaces required identification. US dollar. Food ashore and attraction admission are separate purchases.

How do I get off and back on the ship?

Wait for the ship’s announcement that passengers may go ashore. Follow its gangway, shuttle or tender instructions and any ticketing order. Keep your ship identification ready when leaving and returning. Allow for terminal access checks, queues and security screening before reboarding; tender passengers also need to meet the last return boat.

What should I know about safety around the port?

For a Key West call, check current city and ship instructions if tropical weather threatens. The city’s evacuation guidance places visitors ahead of residents; do not wait for a resident evacuation notice before following instructions that apply to visitors. This describes the planning policy, not an active evacuation. A town walk or Fort Zachary Taylor visit does not establish current sea conditions or a security review.
